It was a pretty good prediction. They must have thought that with movies being widescreen that TVs would eventually go that way too.

Sure I understand that, but flatscreen too? As far as I know there was 0 flatscreen technology in 1989.

Flatscreens have been around since the 60s.

The one in BTTF2 was probably a prototype of a commercial product that was being developed at the time but was still too expensive to release.

There were LCD screens. Predicting that they'd be able to make them bigger and in color within 30 years isn't unreasonable.
