Former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed in the Lower Garden District of the city on Saturday night after a car crash. He was shot after exchanging words with an individual in a Hummer who rear-ended his car, leading it to strike another vehicle. Smith, 34, was shot a number of times and his wife Racquel was shot twice in the leg, according to police. Smith was pronounced dead on the scene and his wife was taken to the hospital. The 30-year-old driver, and the alleged shooter, is in custody and being interviewed.

Re: NFL Off Season Thread: Ex-Saints Star Will Smith Murdered

SAN JOSE -- Former San Francisco 49er Dana Stubblefield was charged Monday with the rape of a "developmentally delayed" woman, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said the woman was assaulted on April 9, 2015, when she went to his Morgan Hill home to interview for a baby sitter's job. The woman immediately reported the alleged crime to the Morgan Hill Police Department.

Stubblefield, 45, is charged with five felony counts related to assault and faces a "substantial prison sentence" if convicted, according to prosecutors.

"This was a crime of violence against a vulnerable victim," said Deputy District Attorney Tim McInerny in a statement. "She was looking for a job and she was unconscionably assaulted."

Through his Sacramento-based attorney, Ken Rosenfeld, Stubblefield called the allegations "false" and "fraudulent." In a statement, Rosenfeld said Stubblefield and the woman had consensual sex, and that she asked him for a job and money afterward.

Bail for Stubblefield is set at $250,000 and he was still in custody Monday evening. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Stubblefield contacted the woman, who officials said has a "severe speech impediment," through Sittercity.com to see if she was interested in a job as a nanny, according to a Morgan Hill police report. They set up an interview for the next day at Stubblefield's home.

The interview lasted about 20 minutes. The woman left. Minutes later she received a text message from Stubblefield saying he wanted to pay her for her time that day. She went back to the house where Stubblefield picked her up, carried her to a room and raped her, and forced her to "orally copulate him," the report says.

Stubblefield gave her $80 and let her go. The woman drove straight to the Morgan Hill Police Department, where she reported being assaulted by a man named "Dana."

DNA evidence matched that of Stubblefield, the report said.

Stubblefield's attorney said there is no evidence to support the allegations, which he said Stubblefield only learned about in February.

"Dana Stubblefield is being unfairly targeted due to his celebrity and wealth by someone with full motivation to lie." Rosenfeld said. "Mr. Stubblefield passed a lie detector test with flying colors and will present a full, vigorous defense against these allegations."

Prosecutors around the country have been extremely cautious to ensure sex cases against athletes are airtight before they file charges ever since the Duke University lacrosse rape case imploded in 2007.

Three members of the North Carolina team had been falsely accused in 2006 of raping a stripper in what came to be understood as a rush to judgment, which backfired a year later and led to the resignation and disbarment of the Durham County district attorney.

In Santa Clara County, several athletes have been charged with sex crimes, including former 49er defensive tackle Ray McDonald, who was indicted by a criminal grand jury on rape charges.

"We feel that these are important cases for us to get it right," McInerny said. "We understand the ramifications both to the victim and to the suspect. This is a case that it took what it took for us to file charges this week. We take all these cases very seriously, especially sexual assault."

Stubblefield was a first-round draft pick in 1993 from University of Kansas as a defensive tackle for San Francisco, where he played for seven of his 11 years in the NFL. He won Super Bowl XXIX with the San Francisco 49ers in 1995.

He stayed with the team through 1997, then moved to the Washington Redskins, where he played through 2000. He returned to the 49ers for the 2001 and 2002 seasons, and played his last year in 2003 for the Oakland Raiders.

Stubblefield is no stranger to legal troubles.

In 2008, he was caught in the Balco steroids scandal and pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents about his use of performance-enhancing drugs. He also was sentenced in 2010 to 90 days in jail for stealing a former girlfriend's mail, including her unemployment checks.

After he retired from football, Stubblefield coached at Valley Christian High School in San Jose for four years until 2009, when he stopped down after accusations by his ex-fiance of repeatedly harassing her during the previous year.

Stubblefield lived in and around Willow Glen for years and was often seen, even in the past several months, in the area walking his dog.

It turns out Native Americans are just like all of the other kinds of Americans: They don't care about the Washington Redskins.

Did they ask real Native Americans or a bunch of random white dudes who claim to be 1/64 Cherokee?

Liberals can't process this. They can't handle that they're not knights in shining armor for minorities. Because, you know, non-white people can think for themselves.

Like I always say, I enjoy Super Mario and the Sopranos. How is Mario speaking with an over the top accent affecting my life? It isn't

The NFL will suspend the four active players at the center of the league’s performance-enhancing drug probe if they don’t provide interviews to the league by Aug. 25.

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison, Green Bay Packers linebackers Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers and free-agent linebacker Mike Neal will be suspended beginning Aug. 26 if they haven’t cooperated, NFL senior vice president of labor policy and league affairs Adolpho Birch told the NFL Players Association in a letter Monday that was obtained by USA TODAY Sports.

Allegations that the four players were linked to performance-enhancing drugs were first raised in the Al Jazeera America documentary The Dark Side. The NFL Players Association previously stated that affidavits submitted by the four players in July constituted reasonable cooperation, but the league still held steadfast in its pursuit of in-person interviews.

The union also argued that players should not be required to cooperate with the investigation because Charlie Sly, the former anti-aging clinic who implicated the players in hidden-camera footage in the documentary, later recanted his claims.

The full text of the letter is below:

As you know, the league has been investigating a nationally televised report concerning potential violations of the collectively bargained Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances. There can be no question that the league has a good faith basis for conducting this investigation; moreover, the league and NFLPA have a shared interest in ensuring that our jointly developed policy is not being violated.

Nevertheless, since the initiation of our investigation in January the league has made at least seven attempts to arrange interviews of Messrs. Harrison, Matthews, Neal and Peppers. On each occasion, the NFLPA has communicated the players’ refusal to participate. Most recently, the NFLPA has attempted to prevent the interviews by submitting for each player a half-page statement, which you advised should be treated as a sworn statement given in a legal proceeding, and which you contend should fulfill the players’ acknowledged obligation to cooperate with the investigation. The statements, however, are wholly devoid of any detail, and we were quickly able to determine that Mr. Neal’s statement includes an assertion that is demonstrably false. Rather than eliminate the need for interviews, the players’ plainly deficient statements simply underscore the importance of obtaining their full cooperation.

You were so advised on July 29, when we again wrote to offer the players another opportunity to participate in an interview, beginning with Mr. Neal. In that letter, you were expressly notified that continued noncooperation could result in discipline up to and including a suspension. In response, you provided a revised statement and letter which acknowledged Mr. Neal’s prior steroid policy violation and that his previous “sworn statement” is in fact untrue. Most important, you advised that Mr. Neal had again refused to cooperate with our investigation by participating in an interview.

There is no dispute that players are obligated to cooperate with the league’s investigation, as you have repeatedly acknowledged. This obligation includes not only the responsibility to submit to an interview but also the duty to provide meaningful responses to the questions posed. Nor is there a dispute that a failure to cooperate or an attempt to obstruct the investigation may result in discipline, including suspension from play, for conduct detrimental under Article 46 of the CBA and the NFL Player Contract.

We cannot accept your unilateral assertion that the cursory, untested statements you have submitted satisfy the players’ obligation. Accordingly, the Commissioner has directed that Messrs. Harrison, Matthews, Neal and Peppers be given until Thursday, August 25 to provide interviews. For those players whose interviews do not take place on or before that date, or who fail meaningfully to participate in or otherwise obstruct the interview, their actions will constitute conduct detrimental and they will be suspended, separate and apart from any possible future determination that they violated the steroid policy. The suspension for each such player will begin on Friday, August 26 and will continue until he has fully participated in an interview with league investigators, after which the Commissioner will determine whether and when the suspension should be lifted.

To avoid this outcome, please promptly contact my office to make arrangements for the interviews. As previously stated, we will make every effort to accommodate the NFLPA’s availability, within the outlined time period.

It will be the worst season. Everybody is boring on that team. And they had JJ Watt last year on the show, so it'll be a big step down.

But nobody will top Rex Ryan.

They should have had Hard Knocks in the 80's/early 90s and just focused it on the Cowboys.

Yep would make Game of Thrones look like Sesame Street :olol:

The Cowboys are in town and that snow is the other kind! Allegedly :owink:

Watched the first ep of the new Hard Knocks. Not too bad. One player has a crush on Swifty. Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar turned up at practice. Coach is wacky. One guy playing Pokemon Go.

ESPN has reported 20 Major League Baseball teams are planning to send representatives to an open work out with former NFL Quarterback Tim Tebow.

For almost the past year, Tebow has been training in Arizona and Los Angeles to hone his hitting and fielding skills in a sport he has not played on a full-time basis since 2005.

Tebow was an all-state baseball player in Florida that year and hit .494 as a junior, helping Nease High School reach the final four of the Florida state playoffs.

Tebow had a tryout with the Los Angeles Dodgers before this season, sources have told ESPN's Darren Rovell. A scout was present for the workout, and the team showed interest in Tebow afterward, the sources said.

Tebow, 29, won the Heisman Trophy and two national championships with the University of Florida and was drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos in 2010. He has not played in the NFL since 2012 with the New York Jets. He went to training camp with the New England Patriots in 2013 and the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015 but was cut before the season each time.

Tebow's desire to play professional baseball has been met with mixed reaction. After the news of his intentions was announced, Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones poked fun at him on Twitter. Former Broncos teammate and current Jets receiver Eric Decker, meanwhile, said he was confident that Tebow would at least land a minor league contract.

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona managed Michael Jordan when the basketball star did a stint in the minors with the Birmingham Barons in Double-A in 1994 and said earlier this month that transitioning to baseball from another sport is "a little harder jump, though, than I think people realize."

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who played two seasons of minor league baseball in the Colorado Rockies organization, was recently asked by TheMMQB.com whether he had any advice for Tebow.

"Hope he can hit a curveball," Wilson said, adding that "baseball's pretty hard."

It really bugs me that people get so worked about this shit. We're talking about a QB that's 3 years past his shelf life.

Unfortunately, Kaepernick did prove one thing: White people don't want to talk about race relations. Rather than talking about why he pulled this publicity stunt, I have Facebook friends dump jingoistic memes all over. The guy next to me at yesterday's fantasy draft had a short monologue when someone was stupid enough to draft him.

A few more points:

1. I don't think he said "Fuck the Veterans, especially the dramatically injured ones."
2. I think he should have thought out his message better and avoided sounding like a dumbass.
3. There are problems to solve (infrastructure, education and income), a few of those have affected his life.

I guess, it's one thing to be mad at him and say he's an asshole. It's another thing to put everyone on blast because a Squidward clone is "undermining U.S. values."

Uff, here's something no one asked for:
Niners Nation wrote:EA Sports released Madden 17 recently, and they are in the midst of providing updates to make the game more realistic throughout the season. This will include announcers Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis making regular appearances at their studios to provide updated audio.

And now, it will include the San Francisco 49ers controversial topic. EA Sports confirmed to Gamespot (via Polygon) that in an upcoming update to the game, there would be a reference to Colin Kaepernick’s controversial protest.

"Kaepernick's decision will be briefly mentioned in-game, reflecting our commitment to authenticity in Madden NFL 17," a senior publicist for EA Sports said. "Overall, our new commentary will mainly center around on-field performance, as well as major news like trades, free agency signings, and injuries.

So, if you picked up the newest Madden, keep an eye out for the update, which I imagine will come sooner rather than later. This is aside, I’m pleased that they decided to change announcers, and are adding updates throughout the season. One problem I always had with Madden (although I haven’t played it much recently) was the repetitive commentary. This could make for a slightly more interesting game.
