Went down to Rye beach yesterday and a dead seal had washed up on it. It was sad to see but also interesting. It's the first time I've seen a seal out in the wild, even if it was dead.

Grendel went up and had a sniff of it's tail but backed away quickly. He didn't like what he smelled.

He has a red meat allergy (it gives him ear infections) so he has to eat stinky fish, which he loves. He didn't love this stinky thing.

I stood right next to it and couldn't smell anything.

Well, I found out today that my German Shepherd is 100% blind. He's 8.5 years old and was perfectly fine up until recently when I noticed he would bump into random things. Went to a vet last week, then to an eye specialist today and he confirmed it. From the time he was fine to now was probably 1-2 months at most. Doesn't look like it's fixable either. So that sucks...

That does suck.

I remember reading a while ago that blind dogs can still have a good, fun life once they get used to it. Losing sight doesn't affect them as much as it does humans.

Yes, even dogs with sight heavily depend on smell to get around and know where they are going. Blind dogs can smell their way home if they aren't too far.

Yeah he seems OK. He's definitely a lot quieter than he used to be. He just doesn't really run around and play like he used to. He's fine on walks though.

Yeah, my childhood dog was like that when she went blind when she was 12 or so. It's an adjustment for a while for them.

Sorry to hear about your dog Skynet. Has the Vet said what caused the blindness? But like Dr Z and Bandit have said it takes some time to adjust but they can still be OK with their sense of smell. I would keep their food and water bowls, bed, any toys/bones etc in the same place so they know where everything is. Really sucks when a pet becomes ill but they are very resourceful and can cope with it.

We're leaving everything as is, not that we shift stuff around all that much anyway. Got a referral to an eye specialist. He was convinced he knew what it was, but recommended we do some tests to prove it. He was wrong, he doesn't know what the problem is. Now I have to go see a neurologist for him.

He said when he ran the tests he didn't find any of the usual signs he was looking for and his eyes look fine. If you look at him he looks perfectly fine. He's a good weight (just all fluff, really), there's nothing really wrong with him, other than the fact that he can't fucking see.

The German Shepherd has given me nothing but grief since we got him, he's always sick. He's a purebred. The other one is a mixed bag and she was found in the park before we got her from the animal welfare league. She's been fine and never got sick once. Maybe next dog I get I won't get a purebred, even though I think German Shepherds are the best.

Yea that's the problem with animals they look fine because they hide their health problems/ailments. As they are predators and they don't want to show any sign of weakness. A pure bred are unfortunately more likely to suffer health issues because of their genetic makeup.

Have they done any blood work to look at the kidneys because kidney problems and hypertension can cause blindness & detected retinas. I would get a second opinion as it might be detached retinas can be reattached if caught fast enough. As it's a recent occurrence I'm wondering if it is neuro related. Since it would be progressive and you'd notice signs of decline in your dog acting differently. Have they become more snappy, lethargic, acted differently etc?. It could be just a unfortunate side effect of being a pure bred. Also could be this
A less known cause of sudden blindness in dogs is Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome, or SARDS.
Also another thing is diabetes which relates to cataracts and kidney problems. Whatever the cause I'm hoping your dog will be OK and it doesn't affect them too much. Again it really, really sucks to have an ill pet, so all the best.

No blood work or anything yet. We have a referral to go to a neurologist in a few days, whenever we can get in really.

This happened over the course of maybe 1-2 months I'd say. It wasn't too long ago that I was out the back throwing stuff to him and he was catching it. Likewise with little treats and shit, he's normally OK with that. So definitely this year sometime.

SARDS isn't the issue, that was ruled out the other day when they did the testing. They also saw no signs of cataracts being an issue.

I'm still hopeful they can find what the issue is, but I've come to terms with the fact he may be blind for the rest of his life. I hadn't planned on moving until after the dogs eventually passed away anyway, as that in itself would be a nightmare trying to sell this place with how much of a mess they can make lol.

But I appreciate the kind words. I'm sure he'll be fine, I just hate that I can't help him at this stage, possibly at all. We'll see how it all goes.
