The 50 cent coin is common. 50p is UK money so that isn't common here.

The one on the left.. or do you mean a normal 50 cent coin?
same shape and size as the one on the left but with different pictures.

And back in the old days, you could use washers instead of coins in most vending machines, arcades, and payphones. you just had to find a similar washer in size and weight, but by about 1998, most everything had been replaced with ones that were too smart for that..
But the station ticket machine in 2000 would accept 2 5 cent coins stuck together with a bit of thin card between as $2 for about 6 months there.

I saw this this morning, what a lovely tribute! Such fond memories of listening to his commentary - second only to Blowers in my opinion ("he's up to the wicket now... he's there... he bowls... Cook prods to extra cover and there is no run...").
