That's pretty good. I'd say I like half of those songs, and on today's charts it may be 15% or lower.

Yep some good songs on it. Euro Dance/Pop also used to chart quite regularly, especially in 1994. Here's the following weeks chart too

Those top 5 singles are awful. Especially What's Up, one of the worst songs ever.

Re: The Music Chart Thread
Yep, the top 5 is bad, especially the first 2 songs. There are some good songs in the top 50 but overall there's more bad than good.
Here's the chart for the week after, which is exactly 25 years ago today. The top 5 is the same old shit, but Killing In The Name makes it into the top 10, the only other place in the world that happened before 2009 was New Zealand and there are some interesting new entries lower in the chart.
The Come Undone single was good value. I need to try and find that.

IMO Meats best songs are Two out of 3 ain't bad and Objects. IWDAFL is pure Jim Steinman OTTness but I wouldn't say its a bad song. I'd like Meat Loaf to do a southern soul album covers record like of old Stax records artists. Especially if he did it back in the day. Would be Joe Cocker-esque.
The faux Reggae cover of Elvis by UB40 is schmaltzy but not terrible. Surprised to see Johnny Gill so high up in the charts.

The Floor peaked at number 6. Looks like Australia was the only place it was a hit. It's a pretty good song.

Yea it's produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (FlyteTyme). Out of curiosity did any of Johnnys songs hit before that in Australia. His big hit was "My My My" written by LA & Babyface. He charted a few times in the UK http://www.officialcharts.com/artist/26288/johnny-gill/

Thanks Zoidy. Surprised the album got to #9. Were New Edition big in Australia?. If I'm correct Candy Girl got to #1 in the UK but that was quite a few years before Johnny Gill joined them after they fired Bobby. The album with My My My on got an expanded release a few years back.
UK chart from a bit later Sept 18, 1988

Candy Girl got to 10 in Australia but they didn't have another hit until Hit Me Off in 96, which got to 16.

Re: The Music Chart Thread
Thanks, thought their fan base might have started buying Bobby Brown, BBD, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant albums.Dr. Zoidberg wrote:Candy Girl got to 10 in Australia but they didn't have another hit until Hit Me Off in 96, which got to 16.
Noticed Terence Trent D'Arby on the US chart. His first album Introducing the Hardline... is really good, still have it on cassette & vinyl. He gambled a bit too much putting out Neither Fish Nor Flesh, it was his ATWIAD to Princes Purple Rain but it's a solid album too. Had TTD played it safe and came out with Introducing Vol 2 it could have made him a bigger star. I think he got fed up of the spotlight and got out of his Sony contract. He still records music under a new name on his own label and tours in Europe. But he's someone who could have really been a much bigger star. I've heard MJ saw him as competition and they were both associated with John Branca & both were signed to CBS at the same time.

Re: The Music Chart Thread
IMO all TTD (and now Sananda Maitreya) are good. He puts out arty rock and R&B hybrids now and self releases them. They're not all classics since he's not trying for hits anymore, but they all have gems. They're all on Spotify if you have that under Sananda Maitreya. The Sphinx is the one to start with.
As for why his career fell off, he overhyped himself in interviews, saying The Hardline.... was the best album since Sgt. Pepper. Oasis had the same problem in America, where people took their hype seriously and when Be Here Now wasn't even close to anything the Beatles ever did people wrote them off. And people wrote Maitreya/D'Arby off when he put out a artsy ballad heavy album when people wanted pop.

Re: The Music Chart Thread
Yea I have all the TTD albums on CD and cassette & have for years. The "Wildcard!" album is probably my favourite Sananda release. Some of the songs are from his Sony days but it's a real solid R&B album. There's three versions of it I believe and the which is like a remastered version which is the one I have on CD called the Jokers edition.

Re: The Music Chart Thread
From the charts zoidberg posted, we can ascertain that popular music was better in 88 than 93.
93 has killing in the name and fuck all else...
88 had push it, oh yeah, fat, and a couple from inxs.
I need to look up 86 vs 96. Probably be closer.

Nearly every song in the 1986 chart is good.
There's good stuff in the 1996 chart but a lot of shit as well.
Hey macaroni!

Re: The Music Chart Thread
Ian will start to write 1986 was better until he sees Savage Garden in the top 10 in 96.
And I think 96 was better. Return of the Mack, You're Making Me High, How Do U Want It, Scooby Snacks, Devil's Haircut, El Scorcho, No Diggity, Hero Of The Day.

Re: The Music Chart Thread
There's a lot of people I like on the 1986 chart, but in most cases those weren't their best songs. So I'm going with 96 still.
