Surprised "I Hate U" by Prince is so high up in the chart. The Chaos & Disorder album it's from was one which made up the contract severance with Warners. The Black Album (94 release), Chaos & Disorder, The Vault Old Friends 4 Sale were the albums if I'm correct. The Gold Experience was a NPG records release and is part of the new Sony licensing deal.

No songs from Emancipation and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic hit in the US?. Holy River, his cover of Betcha By Golly Wow were hits here as was Greatest Romance from RUTJF.

Interesting, thanks. I think Prince like MJ still retained their core audiences and they were still seen as big deals which when you think about it of course they always were. Just changes in musical trends knocked them off the top. Earth Song and Most Beautiful Girl in the World where both #1s here so must have been like Grunge, Hip Hop etc which pushed them out in the US.

But again we had like Brit Pop etc here so Im assuming the U.K. marketing, promotion & distribution of their records was better. However, TMBGITW was really an independent release (Bell Records distributed it if I'm correct) so in theory they shouldn't have even made the chart at all. I'm assuming maybe that's why Prince didn't really chart in the US (was he absent on the R&B chart too?) because NPG records didn't have the same distribution channels that a major would have. That being said, RUTJF was on Arista which was I believe part of BMG then so distribution, marketing etc shouldn't have been an issue. Maybe the whole name change, feud with WB soured his appeal with music listeners. But George Michael was feuding with Sony and had a huge comeback with "Older".

His singles 1996-2003

Betcha By Golly Wow #31
The Holy River #58
Somebody's Somebody did not chart on Hot 100
The Truth did not chart on Hot 100
1999 re-issue #40
Greatest Romance Ever Sold #63
Supercute did not chart
The Work did not chart
Days of Wild did not chart.

I think the difference is its a lot easier to have a #1 with a small label in the UK than the US. Really only Priority Records, Ruthless Records, No Limit Records and Rap-A-Lot were the completely independent labels to get #1's. But hip hop has its own media system, so small acts can get publicity much easier. So they were able to get big within their own system until the mainstream couldn't ignore them anymore. Like Straight Outta Compton was ignored but became massive and then Niggaz4life went to #1 when it was released because the mainstream decided to give NWA attention then. And Scarface was a big deal nearly a decade before The Untouchable went to #1. Master P even put in 3 years before Ghetto D. But rock and R&B didn't really have anything like that until the internet. The indie bands that broke like Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Green Day, etc. had to go to the majors.

Thanks. That's true about the UK, a label like Creation was backed by Sony so they had that distribution, marketing etc behind a group like Oasis. Stax and Motown come to mind as labels which had big hits without a majors backing in the US. Only in the 80s Motown had MCA/Universal, Stax changed distributor a few times and mismanagement caused the label to go under. So in some ways Prince was smart releasing music independently. Had he still been with Warners idk if he'd have had a career resurgence. Musics really about trends and back then you started to have the influence of pop groups/bands doing faux R&B lite style records so arguably they took market share from the authentic artists. Plus Prince wasn't the type to do a record with like the Backstreet Boys but I guess he could have collaborated with say Christina Aguileria or even Britney.

Surprised MJ didn't do a song with Britney or with like N'Sync or even like a group like Dru Hill to get in the charts. I don't think the song with Biggie from HIStory was released as a single. There was a Bad Boy remix of I Want You Back by the J5 but I'm not sure if it was released a single. Mariah was smart with her Butterfly album working with Sisqo, Puffy and Mase, Mobb Deep but Prince did bring in Eve, Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani etc for the Rave album so guest features didn't really work out there like it did for Santana with the Supernatural album which was huge with Smooth & Maria Maria.

Yeah, and Bad Boy and Death Row weren't real independents like Priority in the US or Creation and Rough Trade. They were vanity labels given to Dr. Dre and Diddy. I think the difference is the US is bigger so hard to promote in all of. Like I remember Noel Gallagher saying he was shocked when he found out they had to spend an entire week just playing cities in Texas when Oasis was promoting Definitely Maybe when they wouldn't even stay in Scotland that long.

Yea that's true. Unless you have like a ton of advanced publicity or can perform on a TV show which has a big viewership then you can to have to grind it out by touring to build a fan base. Back in the day there was Ed Sullivan Show which helped The Beatles, Rolling Stones, other Merseybeat groups and The Animals tremendously. Because of the vast viewership. MTV when it played videos 24/7 helped break groups like Def Leppard, Iron Maiden etc and George Michaels Faith & Listen without Prejudice Vol 1 were very successful too. They are just a few examples plus you had like Ozzy and Black Sabbath, Deep Purple paving the way for heavy rock/metal. Considering the size of the UK there's like different genres come out of certain areas. Ozzy and Sabbath came out of Birmingham as did Noddy Holder & Slade, Roy Wood & Jeff Lynne/ELO. The Beatles and Gerry & The Pacemakers/Merseybeat of course from Liverpool, Marc Bolan; David Bowie etc from London so you had different genres from different places. Plus because the distribution network was smaller we've had white label indie releases chart.

October 13th to 19th 1991 chart

https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/s ... 1013/7501/

Bryan Adams is at #1, Right Said Fred at #13. This chart has groups I have no recollection of like Insanity, Oceanic, Voice of the Beehive, Human Resource, Mega City Four, ChapterHouse & Moodswings.

Oceanic were the band, Insanity was the name of their biggest song. It was OK. I remember there being ads for it in EGM. Or it might have been an ad for one of those get 100 CDs for 10 cents and then pay full price for a CD every month for 5 years deals and their CD was in it.

Voice of the Beehive were a fairly meh indie girl group.

Moodswings had that cover of a Donna Summer song with Chrissie Hynde.

Thanks Zoidy
Or it might have been an ad for one of those get 100 CDs for 10 cents and then pay full price for a CD every month for 5 years deals and their CD was in it.
 Yea those were complete rip offs. I vaguely recall them doing cassette ones here too. They later included books and DVDs in the offer here at least to get out of the contract. I think if you bought so many you got a free CD or two but still in hindsight was cheaper to just go to the record store or even used CD store and save money.

This is about the US one Columbia House, seen ads for it back in WWF magazine back in the day
