Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather
In the seemingly never-ending 'will they or won't they' story of UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor crossing over into the boxing world to face superstar Floyd Mayweather, it appears the fight once thought to be a pipe dream is closer than ever to becoming a reality.
A Tuesday report in the Irish Sun said the two sides have hammered out a financial deal in recent days, but putting pen to paper is being held up by a third party, assumed to be the UFC. They cite sources close to McGregor's home Straight Blast Gym who say the fight could even be announced within the next few weeks.
The newspaper said McGregor is flying to Las Vegas, Nevada, to film a PSA he owes the state as part of a settlement for the bottle-throwing incident he got into with Nate Diaz prior to UFC 202 where he'll also be finalizing details with his team.
McGregor has no scheduled UFC fights as he awaits the spring birth of his first child. Perhaps anticipating a longer layoff, the UFC created an interim lightweight title that will be decided in March between top contenders Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The undefeated Mayweather, a force in the world of boxing PPV, has been retired since September 2015. Even at nearly 40, he'd be a decided favorite against McGregor.
Also I really want to see Conor's Ad Council PSA. "Lay off them fookin' painkillers lad."
