I actually won't be surprised if Russo gets brought in too. I believe them being appointed heads of Raw and SmackDown is essentially a Fox edict. With ratings declining and fan interest declining they had to do something. Who knows it might make WWE worth checking out. But unless they do have a high degree of creative control and allowed to have freedom to do what they want storyline wise, they'll soon fall out with Vince. Plus Paul E hasn't ever put together a show under a PG framework so I have a hunch they'll make Raw TV-14 by October.

Paul can write PG. He has matured from "Have Shane Douglas say 'fuck' 10 times and show Francine's ass." The feeling was if ECW continued it would have turned into what 2000s era ROH was. And when he ran Smackdown besides the Dawn Marie and Torrie Wilson angle he was pretty clean.

Russo is incapable of writing PG on the other hand. If he can't have women calling each other 'bitch' he's lost.

PWInsider are saying they'll both have the same level of power Hunter has with NXT, just that they have to report to Vince. So they won't just be figureheads. Where Stephanie fits in with this aim unsure since she was essentially Vinces second in command.

Makes you wonder why Vince didn't just give either Raw or SmackDown to Hunter, but I guess he's happier with NXT.

It's a play to get people who grew up in the 90s to get nostalgia about how good ECW and WCW were in 1996. That generation would probably be AEW's top demographic.

He's holding off Paul Levesque for when he really retires or dies. If he put him in charge now and business was still bad the shareholders would not want him turning over the company to him. He wants him to come in with a clean track record or else their stock will plunge the day Vince leaves.

Here's what Meltzer is saying on WOL right now.

-Vince is changing the business because he finally realized he's in trouble.

-It isn't clear if it really matters because they've changed head writers a lot and nothing really changes. Vince is still going to shoot down ideas he doesn't like from both of them.

-Dave feels it's a move that looks like Vince is 20 years behind. HHH or someone else behind NXT moving up would be the right move to stay modern.

-Heyman has been in this exact spot twice before and it fell apart quick. But this is a different Paul Heyman who isn't as ambitious as he was in 2003 and 2006.

-Dave says Eric doesn't even follow modern wrestling so it feels like Bill Watts coming back to WCW in 1992. Dave remembers immediately knowing Watts wasn't going to work from talking to him and Watts still talked like it was in 1985.

-Says the business has changed more in 9 months than it did for Watts between 1987 when he sold UWF and returned in 1992. Thinks Eric will just be lost.

-Blames needing to bring back two guys who peaked in the 1990s to Vince never making any stars.

-Wonders if it was to stop the possibility of Paul or Eric going to AEW.

-Dave thinks they should have used HHH instead of Bischoff because he's shown he is in touch with 2019 wrestling. Thinks there'd be no change for NXT if he left.

Segment 2

-Says the only time Vince did this before was in 1995 when Nitro was beating WWF so he brought Watts in. Watts left after a month because he refused to put the world title on Shawn Michaels if he was booker. But Eric will definitely do whatever Vince wants and Heyman probably isn't going to fight as hard as he used to.

-Wonders how Paul and Eric will co-exist because they will have to work together sharing talent.

-Says he's heard Fox actually wanted Paul Heyman but Vince decided to go with Eric because Eric has been dealing with network executives for years and Paul only did once with TNN that was a disaster since TNN hated Heyman.

-The people in WWE who worked with Bischoff in TNA aren't happy because they knew how bad he was in charge of TNA.

-It isn't clear if the All Out ticket sales impacted the decision or it was just the terrible live attendance.

-Doesn't think Russo would be interviewed for a position. The rumors of a Dixie job interview because she was at WWE HQ are false because she was just there to be interviewed for an AJ Styles Network special.

Segment 3

-Likens Hollywood doing too many reboots to being afraid of the future just like Vince is.

-It isn't clear yet if either will have power to end scripted promos or cut the massive writing staff.

-Doesn't know if it's possible to bring back the Nitro party style atmosphere.

-Thinks if Eric isn't a success at first he's going to push for Hogan to come back as as character.

-XFL also may have played as role in the decision since Vince can't be involved with WWE as much.

-It isn't clear when the start date is but it should be known tonight.

-They aren't going to stop current storylines.

-No guarantee Baronmania will end because Vince is still a huge fan of his and would probably fight Heyman if he asked to dump him from the main events.

-It was a total surprise to Dave until this morning. They kept the talks very secret.

-A listener brings up the irony of the things Eric said about taking over from Bill Watts about how new blood is always needed to run wrestling.

-Dave wraps the show up saying he had to dump the Seth Rollins stuff from the WON issue because it means nothing now that this story broke.

Still pulling for New Japan and AEW but I'm sure this'll lead to more entertaining trash fires. :D

WWE has been pursuing Heyman to come on board officially in their corporate circles as far back as February, PWInsider.com can exclusively confirm. An offer was issued to Heyman to come on board full-time as a top member of the creative team around the same time Bruce Prichard was brought back as a Senior Vice President but the conversations were slow in progressing.

Heyman had been working on certain storylines and with certain talents, including Ronda Rousey, Brock Lesnar, Alexa Bliss and many others dating back far before that point. He’s been in the inner circle when it comes to the creative process for some time without an official title. He and WWE have been circling around this deal for a long time and finally came to terms recently.”

Thanks for the recaps Bandit.
The Terry Funk ECW Award Banquet from the night before ECW Barely Legal 1997 was uploaded to the WWE Network as part of this week’s Hidden Gems additions. The WWE Network version of the video is an hour and 46 minutes long.

Me too (and Impact & MLW), but if Paul E and Bisch make WWE watchable again then that's a good thing. Will be very interesting come October when AEW gets TV.

That's some interesting news about Paul E and Eazy E. Hopefully they can live things up a bit.

From WON

-They'll start mid-July.

-Vince had been trying to get Heyman into a long term contract as soon as AEW was announced.

-Heyman had already been handling creative for Rousey, Lynch, Goldberg, Lesnar, Charlotte and Aleister this year.

-Thinks Heyman must be paid a huge sum of money because being full time will take him away from his other projects and family.

-Heyman lasted 8 months on Smackdown (July 2002-March 2003) and 6 months in WWECW (June-December 2006.)

-Vince was unaware of Bischoff running TNA creative for 3 years.

-Cody talking about Bischoff giving him advice may have made him a hot property for Vince.

-Vince has a stock holder meeting in a month and since he wasn't able to meet the promises he made last quarter to bring back fan interest this could be his way of showing he did something.

-They still haven't said whether the writers are staying but Bischoff will need a team because he's never written a show by himself.

Cody talking about Bischoff giving him advice may have made him a hot property for Vince.
Yea that was what I was thinking, which is why I thought Bisch would be on board with AEW in an advisory capacity.

What WWE forget though is Tony Khan is like a fountain of wrestling knowledge. He's heavily into the wrestling stats and analytics so whilst he doesn't have the experience per se, he's very knowledgable. I mean he had to, I'm guessing put stats etc together to show his father that investing in AEW is a viable venture to put hundreds of millions into. So WWE might think they've got a W here but I don't think it should even matter to AEW. They don't want to rely on past glories anyway if they want to be a true alternative.

The fact Heyman has been in charge of Becky all year should be concerning. As soon as Wrestlemania ended she cooled off and she never drew to begin with. Granted being stuck with Lacey is bad. But Steve Austin feuded with the Dude Love gimmick as his first championship feud and it got over and drew. Daniel Bryan was stuck with Kane in his and it had more interest. Charlotte hasn't done anything memorable after Wrestlemania and moody goth guy Aleister is boring and stuck in the 90s. So it's surprising to me Heyman is doing generic WWE stuff and not something like work with Bray's skits or even Samoa Joe who has been doing very good promos this year.
So WWE might think they've got a W here but I don't think it should even matter to AEW. They don't want to rely on past glories anyway if they want to be a true alternative.
Exactly. WWE has been relying on nostalgia since 2011. They've beat the 1990s glory years dead horse. And like I said yesterday, Paul is the age Vince was in 1995 when he lost touch and those running AEW are Paul's age when he was the 30 year old with fresh ideas that understood the culture. Obviously Heyman knows far more than Vince, but he's always going to view Gen X culture as the right thing when maybe that's not cool to the younger audience you want as viewers. And on the other side, Kenny is in touch with gamers, Cody is in touch with the politics of our times and the Bucks are seen as very cool so they instinctively know where to go whereas Heyman is now guessing.

Yea very good points. Not only that but if AEW hopefully hits it out of the park on TNT and they draw in non wrestling fans too, these are fresh & new to that audience and like you say you can tap into multiple different niches - Kenny with gamers (say they get AKI/SynSophia to make a AEW game have him at E3 and other big gaming conventions), Mox brings in some of the WWE audience, Cody some might know from his arrow appearances too, get MJF on Inside the NBA and do a bit with Shaq and/or Chuck etc. Plus guys like Hangman, the Bucks etc all come across as legit good guys and that makes you want to see them succeed. Plus like you said they have that cool factor and are on the pulse of pop culture. WWE are clapping at straws which brings me to...

Vinny Ru's saying he interviewed with Fox regarding a consulting position. I mean this is getting to :rofl2: levels of silliness right now from WWE.

I'm not watching an hour of Russo get get to the story because he's babbling. But Richards and the other guy said they called Fox about a position. That's not really being interviewed for a job position. Anyone can find the phone number to Fox and try to get through to someone asking if you could work there.

Russo also tried to force his way onto POP TV when TNA was on it after he caused them to lose Spike. He called the POP TV guy overseeing TNA and asked if he could be the middle man between the network and TNA. They immediately declined. He also e-mails Vince pitching to come back. So they really aren't job interviews if he is just begging for a job.
