The 80s/New Wave Music Thread
This will be the best thread ever!
New Wave is in the title because some late 70s new wave will probably be in here as well.
Roxy Music - Same Old Scene
"Same Old Scene" is a 1980 song recorded by English rock band Roxy Music and written by lead singer Bryan Ferry. The song was taken from the group's number one album Flesh and Blood, and was released as a single in late 1980. It peaked at #12 on the UK Singles Charts and #35 in Australia.
It contains a drum machine rhythm backing and intricate bass guitar work that would become ubiquitous in many Roxy Music songs that followed. "Same Old Scene" plays during both the opening and end credits of the 1980 film Times Square and is included on the film soundtrack album. It also plays over the end scene and closing credits of the 2008 pilot episode for the television series Ashes to Ashes.

Rod Stewart - Tonight I'm Yours
Rod in New Wave mode. Not as good as Young Turks but still pretty cool. It got to number 8 in the UK, 6 in Australia and 20 in the US.

Thompson Twins - Beach Culture
This was the B-side to the single Lies, that got to 30 in the US & 67 in the UK. Not bad for a B-side, that's for sure.

Spandau Ballet - To Cut A Long Story Short
Allmusic described the single as minimalist "spiky synth pop" with a style reminiscent of early Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark material, and featuring a "dirty, overdriven synth sound and a stomping Gary Glitter-like backbeat". Though largely forgotten today, due to Spandau Ballet's later change in style towards a slick, soul-pop (which occurred around 1983), the reviewer considers that it might fairly be considered "a minor lost classic of the early-'80s U.K. synth pop scene".
It got to number 5 in the UK and 15 in Australia in late 1980/early 81.

Prince does new wave...When You Were Mine
Youtube description: Built on a simple beat, dry rhythm guitar, and squiggly keyboard, this minimal new wave rocker is as catchy as anything heralded bands like the Cars or the Bangles ever put out — and those groups never put their go-go melodies to lyrics that allude to a three-way.
Addendum: This song wasn't released as a single officially but there's a 12" promotional single. It was also the B-Side to the single release of "Controversy" in 1981. "When You Were Mine" is on Prince's 3rd album "Dirty Mind"

The Cure - The Walk
"The Walk" is a 1983 single by The Cure. A synth heavy track that along with "Let's Go To Bed" marked a poppier, less gloomy direction for the band. "The Walk" was the group's first top 20 single in the UK, peaking at #12. The song also got to #34 in Australia and #17 in NZ.

Rupert Hine – Misplaced Love
As a solo artist, his best known song is "Misplaced Love", released in 1981 with guest vocals by Marianne Faithfull, which was a minor hit around the world – though most successful in Australia, where it peaked at #14.

Johnny Warman – Screaming Jets
Former Bearded Lady frontman Johnny Warman's solo debut album, Walking into Mirrors, has justly been proclaimed one of the key albums of the early-'80s shift from electronica to new wave, a chillingly futuristic sound and scenario that might be best known for the hit "Screaming Jets," and which avoids sounding dated even to the present day. "Screaming Jets," of course, was recorded with a passing Peter Gabriel adding hauntingly idiosyncratic backing vocals; Gabriel's then-regular studio band is also in attendance, granting the album a distinctly familiar feel, even on first listen. Warman was promised an Australian tour if the single sold 7,000 copies in Australia. The single sold 76,000 copies and reached number 9 in the Australian charts though the tour never happened. Warman did however appear on an episode of "Countdown" with Molly Meldrum which was filmed in London.

The Go-Go's – Our Lips Are Sealed
AKA Alex The Seal.
The Go-Go’s are an all-female American rock band formed in 1978. They made history as the first, and to date only, all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts.
"Our Lips Are Sealed" is a song written by guitarist Jane Wiedlin and The Specials and Fun Boy Three singer Terry Hall. It was first recorded by The Go-Go's as the opening track on their 1981 album Beauty and the Beat and served as their debut American single in June 1981. The single eventually reached top 5 in Australia (#2) and Canada (#3), and top 20 in the US.

The Swingers – Counting The Beat
Counting The Beat was a one-hit wonder for Kiwi new-wave/pop band The Swingers. Released in 1981, Counting The Beat stayed at #1 in Australia for three weeks, and was the top-selling single for that year. In 2001, the Australasian Performing Rights Association voted Counting The Beat as the 4th best New Zealand song of all time.
