PS4 Surpasses 50 Million Units Sold Worldwide; Best Black Friday of PlayStation’s History
Today Sony Interactive Entertainment announced with a press release that the PS4 has sold-through to customers over 50 million units worldwide as of December 6th, 2016.
The press release also mentions that the console enjoyed the best Black Friday week of PlayStation’s history. The figure is cumulative among all models of PS4, including the newly-released PS4 Pro, that hit the worldwide shelves on November 10th.
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House accompanied the press release with a statement:
“We’re truly delighted that the PS4 community continues to flourish since launch three years ago. With tremendous support from our fans and partners across the globe, this year we were able to deliver an unprecedented lineup of hardware such as the new slimmer PS4, PS4 Pro and PlayStation VR. We will continue to provide the best gaming experiences available through our ground-breaking software lineup and network services, as we focus on accelerating our business and expanding the PS4 ecosystem.”
On top of hardware sales, we also learn about software, that sold-through 369.6 million copies combined between brick and mortar stores and digital downloads as of December 4th.
The press release also promises, as usual, that “SIE will continue to expand the world of PS4 to deliver entertainment experiences that are only possible on PlayStation.”
Sony Corporation announced back in October that the company predicts PS4 shipments to reach 60 million units by March 31st, 2017, and considering that actual sales already reached fifty million units, the target definitely seems within reach.

Re: Sony General Game Thread
Is it only the "George Foreman" model that plays PS2 games?

Only the early 60GB models. Although they can all emulate PS2 games.

I've played around 5 hours of Horizon Zero Dawn so far, the game is great. It's like a cross of Tomb Raider & Assassin's Creed with some Shadow Of The Colossus & RDR mixed in. I haven't done a lot of the story yet, mainly been hunting machines, which is good fun. Very nice graphics.

Re: Sony General Game Thread
That's only partially true. While every version can emulate games via the PS Store, only the 20 and 60 GB models can actually play PS2 discs. So if you have a different PS3 and the game you want isn't on the store, you're out of luck.Dr. Zoidberg wrote:Only the early 60GB models. Although they can all emulate PS2 games.

Yeah that's what I meant. I should have added "if the game is on PSN".melancholy wrote:That's only partially true. Re: Sony General Game Thread
Today Square Enix released a trailer of the PS4 release of the PS2 classic Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, titled Ultimate Hits HD: Star Ocean: Til the End of Time: Director’s Cut.
The port has been developed by using the PS4’s PS2 emulation tech, and the game will be rendered in 1080p, even if CGI cutscenes will keep their original resolution. Support for trophies, share play and remote has been added, and there will be no need to swap disk like in the original.
If you want to see what the game looks like on PS4, you can watch the trailer below.
Ultimate Hits HD: Star Ocean: Til the End of Time: Director’s Cut releases today in Japan. At the moment, there is no information about a possible North American and European release.
