Let us know how it works out. I had thoughts of getting one, but just like you said the reviews had me worried. Plus I doubt I'd notice much improvement from the component cables.

Finally got a chance to hook it up today. Overall it works exactly as advertised and solves the problem I had (which was ditching the ugly mess of cables needed to hook up the Xbox to the TV and receiver). Here are some takeaways:

-This cable does output audio, but it's 2 channel analog only. This seems like a missed opportunity since HDMI could definitely support Dolby Digital. And since there's no optical port like the AV pack has, if you absolutely must have 5.1 sound in the games that support it, this cable is useless to you.

-Visual quality is identical to component. So if your only interest was getting a better picture, this cable won't help if you're already using component.

-This cord has a decent length, looks to be about 8 feet. I wish it was an adapter instead of a cable so I could use my own HDMI cable, but it seems to be sturdy enough.

-It was mentioned in Amazon reviews, but this cable doesn't like HDMI switch boxes for some reason. I didn't have issues hooking directly to the receiver, but the signal kept resetting on the switch whenever the resolution would change.

Picked up one of these over the weekend, almost as good as the original 6 Button controller.. It's a tad smaller, feels a bit cheaper , but the d-pad and buttons are pretty much spot on! Not bad at all for £6.99

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition (Xbox One)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition (Xbox One)
The Disney Afternoon Collection (Xbox One)
Victor Vran: Overkill Edition (Xbox One)
Dragon's Crown (Vita)

Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure (Wii)
Disaster: Day of Crisis (Wii)
Twisted Metal (PS3)

The Saboteur (PS3)
G1 Jockey 4 2008 (PS3)
FIFA Street (PS3)
South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360)
Humble Jumbo Bundle 11
Humble Indie Bundle 19

That's a lot of games! Everything was on special. The first 3 titles listed + bundles & the Vita toilet game are digital downloads, the rest are from EB's 2 for $10, 2 for $20 etc. sales.

Victor Vran brand new was in the 2 for $20 pile but the preowned one was in 2 for $70. Hyrule Warriors brand new was in 2 for $40, preowned 2 for $70. Makes sense.

Zack & Wiki had a new $99 sticker on it and it looks unused. It was in 2 for $10.

Picked up a Sega Mega Drive RGB SCART PACKAPUNCH PRO CABLE from Retro Gaming Cables.

Expensive but "blumin' 'ell worth it, gov'nor", sharp image, deep colours, no pesky jailbars and I'm even noticing details that I couldn't see with my old RGB cable. Pretty damn impressive.

PlayStation VR with Doom bundle. I’ll probably sell Doom immediately and buy Gran Turismo. I wish it would have been an Oculus Rift instead, but for the price plus the fact that you can hook up the PSVR to a PC now and mimic Vive functionality makes this the best deal. It should arrive by next Tuesday.

Do you have one of these?

With that cable it should look nice and clean on a big screen.
