That's weird. I clicked on the video and tried to watch it on YT and it says "Members Only", but it's working when embedded.

Edit: And now it's not working. It must have just changed over to members only.

Vince was there, with legal counsel, but at least for the present, the dispute was settled in that the commission still can regulate wrestling. There was some statute in the law that was being disputed. Ironically, here we have Titan fighting to eliminate commission regulation, when just a few weeks back, they were working with the commission in Illinois trying to get them to enforce an outdated statute to keep Kerry Von Erich from wrestling at Superclash. Consistency at work.

2/13/89 wrote:The trial of Jose Gonzales ended this past Thursday with Gonzales acquitted of all charges in the death of Bruiser Brody. The jury of four women and eight men began deliberations Thursday at 11:55 a.m. and returned a verdict at 1:20 p.m. (and took a lunch break in between), voting nine-to-three in favor of acquitting Gonzales on both charges of voluntary homicide and a weapons violation. In Puerto Rico, unlike the U.S. they don’t need a unanimous verdict in a trial of this type.

After the trial, the World Wrestling Council held a press conference in which Gonzales stated he was very grateful for his friends and fellow wrestlers who stood by him and said that he’s now going to prepare for his comeback. Several of the wrestlers, particularly Gonzales’ partners in the WWC front office, Carlos Colon and Victor Jovica, testified on behalf of their booker. The key point in the testimony was Colon and Jovica both testifying that they saw Brody smoking marijuana earlier in the day and that he was carrying the stuff with him in the dressing room. None of the Americans testified, and this entire scene has turned into a West Side Story in which all the Americans sided with Brody, but none testified, and the Puerto Rican wrestlers sided with Gonzales in his claim of self defense although I do have to point out that according to several letters from someone close to one of the baby faces there, the fear among the wrestlers in this case about not crossing the promotion was tremendous and at least one claimed to be concerned for himself and his family if he said the wrong thing.

2/13/89 wrote:On 2/3, Vince McMahon called up Ted Turner and wanted to make a peace pact about the wrestling war. He wanted both sides to agree to stop raiding talent and to stop trying to sabotage each other’s PPV events. Here is the way I see it. McMahon knows he’s so far ahead right now that if peace is called, he’ll never be challenged. He’s got more talent. and more power to control the talent he has. From what I’m told, Titan isn’t the least bit worried about anything from the wrestling end of the NWA right now because they are doing so much better at the house shows and as far as overall popularity. But Vince doesn’t want a raiding war to boost the salary scale as has happened in real sports, because Turner does have more money and as his experience with baseball and basketball has shown, isn't afraid to spend it.
2/20/89 wrote:Yes, folks, there is no Santa Claus. The big media story in wrestling this week is that the ultimate kayfabe violation has taken place, courtesy of Titan Sports and Vince and Linda McMahon. Titan admitted that pro wrestling was fake and that the competitors do everything they can to avoid hurting one another in a New Jersey state senate hearing on Thursday in hopes of getting pro-wrestling taken away from the authority of the state athletic commission and so state law would no longer mandate a doctor in attendance at ringside during pro wrestling exhibitions. The admission itself isn’t nearly as important a news story as the media’s response, which was huge. The New York Times ran a front-page story on Friday, while the Daily News and Philadelphia Inquirer had major stories on Saturday. Actually, it was the Daily News story that was the most revealing, because it included a statement attributed to Vince that the results of all WWF matches are pre-determined by either himself or his agents and a statement attributed to Linda that the wrestlers do everything in their power to keep from hurting one another.

As of press time, “A Current Affair,” picked up on the thing, most of the TV and radio stations in New York ran the blurb on the news since it is the first time, to my knowledge, that anyone so important in wrestling that was still in the business ever “exposed” the business to the general public. “Entertainment Tonight” was scheduled to run a feature on Monday night (2/13) in which myself and Roddy Piper were interviewed on the subject with Piper presumably calling McMahon a liar for daring to tell the truth.
2/20/89 wrote:The biggest show of the past week (not in terms of fans, but in terms of overall interest) was the AWA’s card on 2/7 at the St. Paul Civic Center where they were to crown their new champion. As expected with every AWA card, it was no-show city, with most of the out-of-town wrestlers not arriving (bad plane connections, you see). Anyway, Larry Zbyszko-Gagne won the Battle Royal to determine the new champion, with Tom Zenk being the final guy in the ring with him. However, the title belt was a no-show, as due to the remarks made on the AWA show about former champion Jerry Lawler, Lawler still hasn’t sent the belt back to the AWA. From what I was told, Lawler is going to send the belt back, but wanted to make sure it didn’t arrive in time for this show since the AWA had gone so far past any standards of normal bad taste in burying Lawler on its TV show the past three weeks. Zbyszko-Gagne starts his new title reign with a belt basically devoid of credibility, since few fans will feel a Battle Royal is a correct way to determine a new champion. And predictably, in AWA fashion, he was pinned in a tag match on the undercard (by Wahoo McDaniel, no less).

So the show began without Lance Russell, and long-time sidekick Dave Brown opened the show, mentioned that Lance had taken another job and “had started early” and made a nice speech which got a good reception from the studio audience, and the subject was dropped completely. Much of the local media attention centered on the idea that Lance, after 30 years in Memphis, had finally made the big-time (since he was NWA bound), and Jarrett didn’t like the insinuation that his group was the small-time.

Judging from the reviews of those who saw the thing, to borrow an overused joke, the movie won’t be released. And whomever lets it escape may face criminal charges. No major distributor would even bid on the film, although a B-movie company called New Vista will release it to 1,000 theaters. Everyone is saying it’s a sure bomb, but there is one variable which Hollywood doesn’t know about the power of, if there is any power here. Nobody who puts out a movie has six hours weekly in every major market of the country, between localized TV and cable, to promote whatever it feels like promoting, and this movie will be what it feels like promoting.

I’m not saying it’ll be successful, just that using traditional criteria to judge if it can interest people may not be germane in judging if people will buy the flick. Most of the distributors thought the movie was terrible, and some who saw it felt this could be the worst movie released over the last four or five years. Hogan’s work wasn’t complimented by anyone, and in fact all but one person who talked with me said he was terrible. The other said Hogan was the best thing about the movie, and that half the time he was awful and the other half he was passable, and that his performance was better than his work on the Friday Night Special. Most of the distributors were at a loss for words after viewing it. In fact, at one screening, Jesse Ventura (whose movie Thunderground was also being previewed by distributors) appeared and after the Hogan movie aired, Ventura (who has a small part. in it) wouldn’t even talk with anyone about it.

It started out with manager Diamond Dallas Page saying he had a gift for Dusty, which turned out to be one of his Diamond Dolls. Dusty said he wasn’t interested. Then as he was walking away, they had a second gift in a box on a cart. Funk came out of the box and hit Dusty in the shoulder with a chain (he was supposed to hit him in the head but the cart slipped).

They start off talking about what happened to Eric Embry in the cage match with Skandor Akbar when Cactus Jack Manson and Super Zodiac (Gary Young) came from under the cage with a baseball bat and hit Embry a half-dozen times, how Embry was in the hospital, may never wrestle again, suffered broken ribs, a concussion and internal injuries. Then they showed the match. The Embry-Akbar actual match was awful of course, but the post-match got a lot of heat with the baseball bat. Embry was spitting up blood and vomiting chunks of food. They absolutely shouldn’t have shown it as it was really sick watching Embry throw up all over the place. Definitely a new low here.

Embry threatened to quit World Class, said he’d get the fans to boycott World Class and that he and Dusek would start their own organization and take all the wrestlers and all the fans with them if the USWA board wouldn’t reinstate Dusek as matchmaker. Also during the show, Embry hit Cactus Jack Manson with 2x4 and Manson did a stretcher job. Later Manson came back with a super Zodiac and they held Embry outstretched and Akbar came out with a chainsaw and tried to saw Eric in half and started doing so and they thought Eric had died, but later in the show, Eric came back with bandages around his waist where he’d been sawed in half and hit all the heels with a tire iron. By the way, that whole last two sentences were made up. I was just trying to give them ideas on where to take things next week since they are running out of hardcore ideas.

Funk kept interrupting Flair which caused the fans to start booing Funk. Finally, he challenged Flair to a title match in a friendly way, but Flair told him he couldn’t just walk in and get a title shot, that he’d have to work his way up the ratings and earn a shot like everyone else. Funk then got mad and asked Flair if he meant that he (Funk) wasn’t of championship calibre and Flair said he didn’t mean that, he just meant he’d have to earn his shot like everyone else. This went on for a few more brief exchanges. Finally Funk said that he was only kidding about asking for the title shot and he really didn’t mean it and shook Flair’s hand. You know what happened next. The big angle. Funk attacked Flair and pounded him all over the place with chairs and tables, including a piledriver on the table before walking off and Flair had to be helped out. Five stars doesn’t do this entire scenario justice.
