There's talk that this might just be a repack of the shitty ATGames console for Japan. Sega can get fucked if it is.

Polygon wrote:To commemorate the console’s upcoming 30th anniversary, Sega took the opportunity to unveil its own miniature “classic edition” version of the legendary 16-bit Genesis (or, as it was called in the rest of the world, the Mega Drive). The so-called “Mega Drive Mini” will be released in 2018, in Japan at least, Sega announced at a fan event today.

This could be a change in direction from the company’s long-standing relationship with AtGames, whose Sega Genesis Flashback console tried, and failed, to match Nintendo’s efforts last year. From our review:
As a one-time Genesis kid whose nostalgic sweet spot is a Sega Genesis, I feel qualified to say that the Genesis deserves better from its owner. But as long as Sega is willing to license out its platform instead of making its own hardware, it seems unlikely to get better than this, the most declarative console war victory imaginable.

Just last week, Sega’s COO said the company was interested in getting back into the hardware business, following the explosive success of Nintendo’s classic reissues. Sega famously exited the hardware business after the failure of the Sega Dreamcast in 2001.

As promising as that sounds, the source interview linked appears to suggest that Sega is simply interested in distributing the AtGames Mega Drive Flashback which, per the review above ... is not great. The model in the image above, with a cleaner version shared by Sega on Twitter which you can see below, don’t resemble the AtGames variant. For starters, it’s smaller than the Flashback console, missing a full-sized cartridge post and adding the console’s original volume slider.
Of course, we don’t know many details about the Mega Drive Mini; the hardware quality, what games will be included, the software emulation powering the games, whether Sega plans to release it in the west, or whether it’s just a redesign of the AtGame units all remain a mystery for now. We’ve reached out to Sega for details and will update this post accordingly.

Hopefully they don't use the crappy AT games hardware and get M2 working on the emulation side.. (If I remember correctly they were responsible for the 3DS classics range, which are awesome).

Now is a good time to release a decent mini system with there being a bit of a buzz around the Megadrive recently with Tanglewood and Xeno Crisis releasing this year.

Apparently it's going to be using brand new 2018 tech... Hmmmmm, we will see.

Thread name change. It's now for all clone consoles, not just Sega ones.

I would want to see some tests first before I get excited about that.

Can I also mention how strange it is that the cart slots are sold separately? Is there some special hardware in the slot addon that runs the emulated console? And if so, how would this ‘digital library’ work if you kept having to swap addons?

It's probably just a way to get more money out of people.

I've only seen a couple things about this console but from what I can gather it is basically just an emulation box that allows you to use original cartridges. There is no FPGA or anything like that it is simply an emulation machine. The add-ons don't have any special hardware in them, they are just adapters to allow whatever systems cartridges to be used. So you get emulated hardware without the convenience of a list of roms to select from. The worst of both worlds.

Apparently there is some shady stuff going on with the people making this device. At one point they showed a Sega Saturn game running on the hardware but people quickly noticed that it was the arcade version not the Saturn one. Their response was, oh the wrong footage got uploaded from a different folder or something similar. It isn't like this thing is going to have a brand new never before seen Saturn emulator on it that can run every game. They will just be using one of the already available ones which the last time I checked aren't all that great. Most comments about this console are negative, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

The other thing that is strange is, they keep saying over 30 consoles BUT when you look at the list it is like "NES, NES Pal, Famicon" . Those are the same three consoles. Yeah the Famicon is a bit different because it allowed extra chips on the cart, but seriously same console.
