Re: Retro Gaming Thread
Hey @Calavera
Are you ready?...

Skies of Arcadia is over rated! There, I said it!
I can't call it bad, it's just not as good as everyone has been saying it is for 23 years.
The combat mechanics, music, story, characters and enemies are nowhere near as good as Grandia 2.
The Graphics, world, characters and story are nowhere near as good as shenmue.
And the general theme, world, flying, enemies and exploring are nowhere near as good as Panzer dragoon Saga.
And every single RPG I have ever liked has better controls and cameras. This game so far is just passable in every single way. Some of the characters are growing on me, but others are just cardboard cutouts. The game attempts so much, but doesn't seem to hit any one thing.
I can't fathom why it's so beloved...
The best part of this game is its concept. Fly around exploring and adventuring, but with the shitty combat mechanics that have no rhyme or reason it makes all the random encounters ABSOLUTELY FUCKING PAINFUL. At least in all the other games with Random encounters I've liked the combat is good enough that it's not painful. But in this, it's shocking! Oh that sky island looks interesting, lets have a look! AHAHAHAAAAAA NOOOO... Let's stop you from doing the most fun thing 20 fucking times before you can get there. I swear I've heard vyse say "retreat" like a million times already simply because I want to explore and not fight god damn snails for the 684th time this boat trip.
But despite how much bullshit the games putting me through (and that whole EWOK village part nearly stopped me)
I'm 30 hours in and still wringing just enough fun from the game to keep playing. I kind of want to see what happens in certain aspects.
There's been nothing game breaking so far, but it's all the little things that keep piling up. There's also been nothing genre defining either. It seems like a good game, not a "must play" for anyone but the most die hard RPG fans.
The real test is if I finish it or not. If something shits me to the point I stop playing, then it's just another RPG, like ALL the RPG's people say are the best game evah maed!!!
But. IF, and only if I actually finish the game, it will be technically one of the best RPG's I've ever played. Because most, I get bored with, usually between 5 minutes and 5 hours, so it's doing something right. But even if it's one of the best I've played, it's going to be the worst of the best RPG's I've ever played.
Sorry.
Edit: I still haven't finished it. Got pissed off in upside down land. May finish it one day.

This video is all ten episodes of my early "10 Years of DOS Gaming" series rolled into one for those who enjoy these longer uploads. It's easily the biggest retro gaming video on YouTube consisting of around 600 games and nearly ten and a half hours of content.

Ah ha! So it was crazy enough for Commodore to have made, but I thought the CD32 pads only came in black.
I've seen a shockingly low amount of all these mini devices.

The original CD32 controllers were only black. The Mini ones are a lovely beige.

Episode 387 - Nintendo's Game Boy was an absolute sales juggernaut and obviously gamers loved it. Would the color follow-up prove to be just as successful and loved? Let's check out some of the many games on the handheld.
