Grand Theft Auto V sales hit 80m units

The juggernaut that is Grand Theft Auto V has now surpassed 80m sales, according to publisher Take-Two. In the company's Q4 and fiscal year earnings release, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that the title has now sold at least another 5m copies since the company's last earnings report in February, taking its total sell-in figure to an impressive 80m since its launch in September 2013.

"The title continues to attract and delight new audiences, especially as the installed base of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One expands further," Zelnick said.

Indeed, he revealed to MCV that physical sales are still the driving force behind the title's seemingly unstoppable success, standing at 75 per cent compared to 25 per cent digital sales: "What's driving this is that consumers love this title and want more of it," he added.

It's unsurprising, then, that GTA V was also the largest contributor to the publisher's bookings in both Q4 and the fiscal year as a whole, helping Take-Two's catalogue titles reached an impressive $880.7m last financial year, which is almost 50 per cent of the company's total bookings for the entire year.

Grand Theft Auto Online had another "record year" as well, delivering year-on-year bookings growth in Q4, and "substantially exceeding our expectations," says Zelnick. It was also the "single-largest contributor to recurrent consumer spending" over the last quarter.

It's not just Rockstar's titles that are doing well, though, as 2K's Mafia III has now sold-in more than 5m units, while Civilization VI has sold-in nearly 2m units. Zelnick also revealed the Civilization series has a whole has now sold more than 40m units worldwide.

NBA 2K17 is also set to become Take-Two's highest-selling sports title ever, with a sell-in of nearly 8m to date. Its recurrent consumer spending also continues to grow, rising 71 per cent over the last fiscal year.

I watched that last night. It's a bit iffy in some places, the faces are ridiculous, the mouth motions are almost horrifying, but it's really well done.

Well they swung the hammer or eradication down on the single player mods, now its the multiplayers mods turn, surely they shoulda just done those & left single player alone right?

Following OpenIV’s closure, Take-Two has gone after two GTA Online cheat makers

Last week, Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, began sending out Cease and Desist letters to various Grand Theft Auto V modding groups. The first tool to go down was OpenIV, which was unfortunately key to many single-player mods in GTA IV and GTA V. While this is a great loss for the modding community, Take-Two has now turned its attention to GTA Online mods, shutting down two cheat suppliers.

Two Grand Theft Auto Online cheat menus have shut down this week, the first being Force Hax and the second being Menyoo. Both cheat providers made money via a subscription service for regular updates, which is a common business tactic in the online cheating world. Force Hax has removed its social media pages and published an apology on its website, promising to donate earnings to charity upon Take-Two’s suggestion.

Menyoo’s website also has an apology listed in place of all previous content. Menyoo will also be donating earnings to charity, though it is waiting on Take-Two to choose one first.

While the removal of GTA Online cheats is generally a good thing for the future of the game, GTA V players are still feeling burned by the shutdown of OpenIV. Last week, GTA V’s Steam page began getting flooded with negative reviews and that hasn’t stopped at all over the weekend. The game now has an ‘overwhelmingly negative’ recent rating, with over 86,000 negative reviews. The game’s overall rating has also been bumped down from positive to mixed.

KitGuru Says: Grand Theft Auto Online does have a cheating problem. However, the timing here is pretty bad. If these shutdowns had happened before word got out about OpenIV, it may have softened the blow.

pretty much the same I think cant red it all to check

Strange how they went after single player mods first as those dont hurt anyone, whereas the online stuff has things like infinite money I think which means no need for people to buy shark cards & such

It didn't make sense getting rid of the single player stuff, unless R* is planning on doing their own paid mod service. Either that or they don't want you to play single player and only play multiplayer with shark cards.

GTA Mod Tool OpenIV Returns – New Version Available

Earlier this month, Take-Two Interactive took down Grand Theft Auto V modding tool OpenIV following a cease-and-desist. As a result, angry fans flooded the GTA V Steam page with negative reviews. Yesterday, Rockstar Games – developer of the GTA franchise – revealed its only problem is with mods that interfere with online play. Thankfully, Rockstar, Take-Two, and the mod’s developer have reached a détente.
Truce

Developer Yuriy “Good-NDS” Krivoruchko reached an agreement with Take-Two and Rockstar to revive the popular mod. Now, not only is OpenIV back, but a new version of the tool is now available. Rock, Paper, Shotgun reports:

“Rockstar have said they’re in contact with [Krivoruchko], the tool has received an update, and a representative of Rockstar itself pointed us towards a fan forum celebrating its return:”

Any Misuse Was Accidental

The purpose of OpenIV to modify single-player GTA games only, Krivoruchko insists. He does admit, though, that it is possible to use it to influence online play. Motherboard reports:

“Earlier this week Krivoruchko told Motherboard that he never designed OpenIV for this purpose. He said that he’s not interested in GTA Online at all. But he did concede that it is possible that some modders have used OpenIV to impact GTA Online. At Krivoruchko’s request, Motherboard is not detailing the methods he discussed so as not to cause more trouble in GTA Online.”

Though I have no interest in the tool, I'm very excited that the two sides were able to come together and create a solution that works for everyone. This is how the industry should work.

This is the stupidest practice ever. I get it, developers do these dumb licenses with the RIAA that put a limited time frame on music. But if you bought the game prior to the expired rights, why the hell would they release a patch to remove that music? You already have the music, it was sold to you as part of a package.

Music rights are ridiculous anyway. It is the one industry in gaming that completely dictates how games are released. You don't have artists issuing texture licenses. You don't have actors issuing voice licenses. The coders don't say, "hey, it's been 10 years, you have to patch out the physics engine now." So why do musicians get away with this stupid practice?

It sucks. The music should be removed for people that buy the game from now on, everyone else should get to keep what they paid for.

It'd be like if back in the day Nintendo somehow automatically updated all Punch-Out carts to remove Mike Tyson and replace him with Mr.Dream. Also GTA VI is over 10 years old. Why even bother with the patch? How many copies could that game possibly be selling?

IV was in a Humble Bundle a month ago, so they've probably sold a fair bit of them recently. Plus it's BC on the Xbox One, which would boost it's sales.

If they took songs out of vice city, I would be outraged! but with 4.. who cares? it had the worst soundtrack of any GTA game (although san andreas' sound track was pretty shitty overall)

Bring on 6 already, and if rumour of Vice city is true.. AWESOME!!
