Dragon's Lair Beta LD 8 of 12 $518?

Post by Calavera » Sun Feb 07, 2021 10:32 am

While searching around for random stuff on the goodwill auction site I came across this.

It is a Laserdisc which seems to be sealed with a sticker on the plastic that says
"Dragon's Lair Beta Copy #8 of 12 Not to Be Sold"

The auction ended at $518 but I see some major red flags.

First of all the Laserdisc is still sealed so how could it have anything on it since it is just a generic blank laserdisc (I assume)

So then maybe some company put the information on the disc and re shrink wrapped it? Seems odd.

Second the date on the bottom right corner on the back of the cover says 1998 which is long after Dragon's Lair was a thing. Why would a beta version be on a Laserdisc that was made in 1998?

It all seems shady. I could just go buy a sealed blank Laserdisc and put a sticker on it that says "Road Blaster Pre-Release" and sell it for 100s of dollars.

It does seem weird, but I just saw this:
Although this was not a general studio release, it was the last laserdisc available for sale to the general public, from the website http://www.dragons-lair-project.com.

There were a total of 400 of these discs pressed and each are numbered. It is a repressing of the 1983 laserdisc, with additional Don Bluth animation at the end of the disc that was not on the original 1983 pressing. The arcade machines could be programmed to play the video game with these additional levels. The jacket is just a generic Imation cover, but there is Don Bluth artwork on the disc itself.
