Disenchantment (announcement and discussion thread)

Post by ian »

Matt Groenings new show. On netflix 2018.

"Ultimately, 'Disenchantment' will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you," Groening said in a statement issued by Netflix.

The show will also be voiced by several well-known names, including “Broad City’s” Abbi Jacobson, Nat Faxon, who had worked before on animated series “The Cleveland Show,” and has a role in Netflix’s newer show “Friends from College;” along with Eric André, John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery.

So far it's 20 episodes, and will be released 10 at a time.

With the cast, Groening's track record for creating good shows, and Rough Draft doing the animation. I can safely say I am looking forward to this almost as much as the day I looked forward to new Simpsons episodes as a young kid, or as much as I looked forward to Futurama when I was an older kid.

Of course, Groenings creations are probably responsible for more of my laughs than anything else, so it's bound to be good. At this stage, He's earnt my blind trust. Like Matt and Trey, or Judge. I don't even need to know the concept, who's involved, or what format it will be to know I will enjoy it.

Let’s start taking bets on how long this will run before cancellation.

Really hard to call, one show has been dead for 18 years and still won’t end,

The other was around just long enough for people to fall in love, then die, then keep coming back.

I think either 3 seasons or 10+

It's a Netflix show, so it will probably go 3 to 5 seasons.

I like it, but it’s missing something I can’t quite put my finger on.

I would have called the show past o rama.

99% of the credits are from Futurama anyway. And that’s a good thing.

I’ll have to watch the rest of it to see if I can pick what’s not sitting right with me (I’ve only watched 5 episodes (stretching it out till new bojack and South Park)

Well I’ve finished it.
I still can’t quite put my finger on what’s off, but I’m putting it down to writing.
I think it seems to be forgetting to be funny to tell a story.

The animation, music, setting, and cast are all spectacular and are propping up both the story and especially the jokes.

I will be watching the career of Eric Andre closely. he’s been great, playing a great character, but Matt Berry has been the major standout.
He’s not playing a great character, and it got stupid after the transformation..
But Jesus his delivery of everything and especially the line: “there’s cabbage?” Had me laughing like a moron.
Show needs more David Herman, like every show he’s in.

If they can pick up the funny a little in the next 10 episodes, there could be another classic on Netflix. Second half of the season was a lot better.

the the next 10 episodes let me down (call it season 1 part 2, or season 2) whatever you call it..
First 10 episodes = setting up an epic adventure.
episode 11 and 12 = shutting that up and starting a less interesting adventure.
it was funny, and enjoyable.. but undoing an interesting story, to replace it with a worse one seems a little stupid...

To put it in Futurama terms... Let's set up Fry liking Leela, and now we'll make it about Zoidberg and Zapp Brannigan...

FUCKING WHY?

Well I’ve watched the new episodes. Chapters 21 - 30, part 3? Or season 2 part 1. Whatever you want to call it.
I have no strong feelings one way or another.
It’s good, and I was liking it, untill Richard Ayoade popped up in it.
Normally I’m thinking I’d rather be watching Futurama, what with most of Futurama’s production team making it.
But Ayoade being in it (joining Berry and Fielding) just reminded me I’d rather be watching The IT Crowd as well as Futurama.

The show I think has definitely found its feet and rhythm, but they may as well end this after 1 more season and make a Futurama/ IT crowd crossover at this point.

I liked the newest episodes, chapters 31-40.
I was really liking the season till the very end. at this point I forgive the distinct lack of jokes because I'm really enjoying seeing where the story goes.

Ended on a cliff hanger, so it better be coming back for a new season.

I haven't started the newest episodes yet, but I hope it keeps going for a while. It started rough, but it was still finding its feet.

It's coming back for a final season.

I can't wait for it to be dead for a few years and then come back, only worse than it was. And then just when it's good again, it can get scrapped...

I enjoyed the last 10 episodes. I'm sad it's over. Not as sad as the first 4 times Futurama ended, and not as sad as The Simpsons still going. But sad.

The ending felt rushed though. Really rushed. Like it needed 10 more episodes to establish changes, let things develop and tie up all the loose ends and give a proper goodbye to the characters they gave you just long enough to start to care about.

The last episode did a good job in its 40 minutes of tying up 50 million loose ends, but from the relationships to the plot to the jokes, the last 10 episodes just tried to squeeze too much in in so little time, pity.

I'd buy All 50 episodes in a complete Bluray box set with commentaries if I was given the option, but without that the series will be sat as just another Netflix show that ended too soon. Like most.
