James Brown, like George Clinton, loved hip hop because it revived their careers and they made fortunes from constant sampling. Plus James was rapping before rap existed on a lot of his songs. But they may have felt different if they were still relevant to pop music once hip hop came in like Prince and MJ were.

I think James was in a similar situation to what MJ & Prince in the mid 1970s. Disco was coming in and his music so starting to be out of fashion. So he adapted and put out a record called the Original Disco man. He was competing with Barry White, TSOP which had the disco backbeat but string arrangements (like Barry was doing with Love Unlimited, the Love Unlimited Orchestra & his own music with Gene Page who was an arranger).

Commercially though music became more synth/computerised in the 80s so JBs music was not as impactful and influential, until sampling came in then his music became relevant. But I don't think it equaled to commercial success for him with his own recordings. He signed to Scotti-Bros in the 80s and of course Living in America was his biggest hit. He put out a hip hop influenced record in the late 80s too but he was unfortunately not the same influential artist he once was. Both Mike and Prince credit him as a musical influence and in his day JB was an amazing artist.

George Clinton started out in a vocal harmony group (The Parliaments) then signed as a staff writer at Motown. He actually wrote for the J5 which again links them all together. He of course had two bands - Parliament & Funkadelic. I believe he amagalmated them both at one point. Then disco came along but I think he suffered during that period. P-Funk was much more solid musically than Disco (which is essentially watered down uptown R&B) but you had artists surpassing him in the charts. He did come back with the Computer Games LP & "Atomic Dog". Plus he helped get Zapp signed to Warner Brothers. Roger and Zappa music too was heavily sampled.

But by the late 80s I think he lost his label deal so Prince signed him to his Paisley Park label and he's part of the Graffiti Bridge soundtrack. His music like JBs was sampled and P-Funk was hugely for the evolution into West Coast G-Funk. George embraced hip hop and worked with Ice Cube among others and did a collab album with other hip hop artists. He also influenced Shock G and Digital Underground who are very Parkiame t-esque musically.

So yea both were very influential in hip hop. Arguably the foundations along with the OG artists.

Not for his current music, but as a live act performing his greatest hits and selling copies of his 60s and 70s music. George Clinton also wasn't selling new albums, but G Funk made him popular enough with teenagers to be on the 1994 Lollapalooza.

Yea, although James music only really got a remaster a year and a bit ago on iTunes/digital release on all his earlier releases. His more popular albums did get put out on CD in the 90s. Live @ the Apollo is one of his best albums and I think that's been continuously in print. He also got the Star Time box set which sold well. But Universal James in 1992 I don't think was very successful.

George was kept more in the mainstream public eye because of his association with Cube et al and hip hop embracing him like Snoop did with Charlie Wilson. You could see George Clinton on MTV & he had his unique image. JB was more old school and you might only see him on Living in America music video on MTV etc. For the older artists staying visible and current is important. Otherwise you're a nostalgia act. Going back to Charlie by his association with Snoop it kick started his career again. Same with Ron Isley and Kels. The talent is always there it needs to be re-discovered by a new audience.
