Trained by Ric Flair, Karl Gotch, Buddy Rogers and Ricky Steamboat. He should have been the best wrestler ever.

Had a stroke at 27. That sucks.

[INFO] Turner gives WCW TNT slot

Dave Prazak

08/06/1995

The following is a cross-post of a recap of Mike Tenay's Hotline message
for 6/8/95 as posted by Robert Ryder on Prodigy just moments ago...

Board: WRESTLING BB

MIKE TENAY HOTLINE REPORT June 8, 1995
------------------------------------------------------------

****BULLETIN****BULLETIN****BULLETIN****BULLETIN****
Mike Tenay reports on his WCW Hotline Report for June 8,
1995 that WCW Sr Vice President Eric Bischoff met with Ted
Turner this week. Bischoff was given the go ahead to begin
production on a Prime Time 2 Hour "cutting edge/state of
the art" Wrestling Show that will go head to head with
Monday Night RAW. The show will be aired from 9pm-11pm
Eastern on TNT. Production meetings will begin shortly and
the show is expected to be ready for the fall. TNT is a
sister company of TBS and is also owned by Ted Turner.>>>>
In other news....

***Wrestler Ron Cumberledge (a TV jobber) was arrested this
week for Steroid distribution. (note: no word which fed he
works in or he he 'distributed' it to)

***Ken Shamrock has been pulled from the upcoming Pancrase
show due to a knee injury. Tenay says he is actually in

***Marcus Bagwell is out indefinitely with a leg/calf
injury. Bagwell is on crutches, and it is uncertain how
long he will be out of action.

***New Japan has added a stipulation to the upcoming IGWP
match between Muto and Tenzon. The loser must forfeit the
right to use the Moonsault.

***WWF TV tapings this week saw Chris Benoit appear in dark
matches on Monday and Tuesday. Benoit lost to Bob Holly on
Monday, and was accompanied to the ring on Tuesday by Ted
Dibiase...but still lost to Adam Bomb. Shane Douglas was
also present on Monday, but stayed backstage.

***The 'live' match on RAW between Owen Hart and British >>
Bulldog was actually taped 3 weeks ago. In next weeks
match between Yokozuna and Lex Luger, Yoko wins by countout.

***Roadie is out with a knee injury. He had arthroscopic
surgery last week and will be ready for KOTR.

***Recent WWF house show gates have been disappointing.
They return to New York this weekend and Shawn Michaels
will fill in for Diesel against Sid.

***Tatanka suffered an injury at the Superstars tapings
this week. It is not clear whether the injury is serious
(note: or if it is an excuse to get him off the KOTR).

***ECW is experiencing continued financial problems and
uncertainty about the future. The June 17 ECW Arena show >>
will be headlined by a Sandman vs Cactus Jack Barbed Wire
Match. Konan may be appearing on upcoming shows.

************************************************************

That's the report for June 8. The news about the new TV
show is HUGE. The fact that Turner is going to commit to a
NEW 2 hour show on TNT would seem to indicate that WCW is
part of his long range plans. The show is not scheduled to
start until the fall...which is PAST the time rumored to be
D-Day for WCW. This is a very positive sign for WCW, and
insures their long term survival...in one form or another.

Turner has always had the tools to overpower the >>>>>>>>>>>
competition....but didn't seem inclined to flex his muscle
until recently. Several recent events have shown that
there is strong support within the Turner 'family'. The
recent NASCAR event on Memorial Day weekend was a prime
example. The WCW show was heavily promoted during the
race, and received respect from mainstream sportscasters.
I know there will be some who will immediately dismiss the
importance of this announcement...just because it is WCW.
DON'T downplay it's importance. WWF has been untouched by
the Turner machine, and it is likely that the big ratings
that RAW has received finally caught someones attention!

Yeah I remember him saying that.

Imagine getting calf implants (for non-medical reasons), what a dickhead.

Remember when Monday (or whichever day the shows aired on tape delay) was your favorite day of the week 23 years ago?

Imagine if Metal Jesus made this video? It would be Undertaker vs Mankind Hell in a Cell at number 1 on his list.

I loved this shit so much when I was a little mark. I couldn't wait to see Undertaker beat Yokozuna for the title.

"Merry Christmas, Yokozuna..........Ho.............ho...........................ho."

And Vince let Heenan go 3 months later even as great as he was here. Bobby is calling this like it was the most important battle since the Allies defeated the Nazis and he didn't think he was worth the money.

Money. Heenan and Okerlund were working under deals signed when the business was still good. So he decided it would be cheaper to just put Jim Cornette and Jerry Lawler (and Shawn Michaels, who people forget was an occasional Raw commentator when Lawler had to do Memphis stuff) on commentary since they were already at the shows as talent. And Todd Pentingill took Gene's job for a lot cheaper. So Bobby and Gene went to WCW where they were paid what they were used to.

Obviously Corny and Lawler were great (I think Vince and Jerry are underrated for announcer chemistry) but there's this idea that Bobby must have been bad at the end of his WWF run since he was never the same in WCW. But that isn't true, he was great until the day he left WWF. It was just that he didn't click with Schiavone and didn't feel respected by Turner so stopped giving a shit.

Oh, and they tried Ted Dibiase to take over for Heenan for a few months, but he was terrible. Proving being a good promo doesn't always make a good announcer.

I just remembered that they tried a Gorilla Monsoon and Jerry Lawler announce team a few times also in 1994 on Superstars and they were surprisingly bad. They didn't have chemistry. So it's weird how well Jerry worked with Vince since they weren't friends and didn't have anything in common besides running wrestling promotions. But IMO Vince was better with Jerry than Heenan (who he was friends with.) And Vince and Jesse worked because Jesse's style was to antagonize the babyface so their real life heat worked out.

I've been watching a bunch of Rocky Johnson matches lately after reading his bio. Man, that dude was a hellacious worker, just smooth as shit on the mat but could fly as well. One of the cleanest dropkicks and an absolute genius at ring psychology and storytelling.

He was very ahead of his time and should have been a bigger star. He was better than Dwayne but of course didn't have his superhuman charisma.

I was watching an episode of ECW from January 1997 where they set the angle in place for the Terry Funk comeback. It is funny in hindsight that Terry is 53 and they're selling him like he's the oldest man who ever tried to wrestle. They're all like "What? A 50 year old is going to wrestle a match?!" 20 years later he could headline a Wrestlemania no problem at 53, but in the 90s when they still made stars it was a novelty. And 10 months later Vince decided 40 year old Bret Hart was too old for him to main event even though today Bret would have another 10 years on top.
