-- Ratings are in for Wednesday's installment of the Wednesday Night Wars -- with AEW Dynamite taking the night with an average viewership of 817,000 to NXT's 757,000.

However, the Dynamite number was down 12 percent from last week while NXT dipped by just two percent.

In the 18-49 demo, AEW averaged a 0.3 rating, down 17 percent from last week, good for a 10th place finish on cable. NXT was up nine percent in the demo, averaging a 0.24, putting them 21st.

The NXT demo number represents one of their best showings since their first few weeks, and the gap of 0.6 between the two was the closest the WWE property has been since December 18 when they beat Dynamite.

In addition to people over 50, NXT also had a slight win in females 18-49 with a 0.18 to 0.16 advantage over AEW. Per usual, AEW's strongest category was men 18-49, where they had a 0.41 to 0.28 advantage.

In most other categories, the shows were either tied or within 0.03 of each other.

Miz and Mrs, which immediately followed NXT on USA, was down four percent this week, averaging 457,000 viewers. That was good for 49th on cable in the 18-49 demo with a 0.16 rating.

Here's a look at the last 10 weeks of competition as well as the average in ratings and total viewership for both shows:

Image

-- Raw increased eight percent from last week's low level with a show that did the best job of keeping the audience in a long time.

Raw averaged 2.34 million viewers, not far off the 2.40 million for the show the day after the Royal Rumble. But more important was the ratings pattern where for the first time since August 26, the audience grew in the second hour. This isn't unusual during daylight savings time but it is very unusual during standard time, particularly in the winter.

The first hour was up three percent from last week, but the second hour was up 11 percent and third hour was up nine percent.

The first-to-third hour drops were minor -- four percent for women 18-49, five percent for men 18-49, teenage girls increased 14 percent, teenage boys dropped 11 percent, and over 50 dropped six percent.

Raw was first in 18-49 and eighth overall on cable, trailing only news shows on Fox News and MSNBC.

The show was down five percent from the same week last year.

The real story was the growth of teenagers and over 50 in hour number two, which also was stable in 18-49.

In particular, the big winner was Angel Garza, whose match with Cedric Alexander was the high point of the show.

The three hours were:

8 p.m. 2.40 million viewers
9 p.m. 2.41 million viewers
10 p.m. 2.20 million viewers

-- We were able to see a quarter-hour breakdown of last Friday’s edition of Friday Night SmackDown that featured Bill Goldberg’s appearance to challenge The Fiend for a Universal title match.

The show peaked in the first segment with the return of ‘The Dirt Sheet’ with The Miz and John Morrison, who was confronted by the New Day with an average of 2,657,000 viewers.

From 8:15-8:30 pm, it was The Usos vs. The Miz & John Morrison and it fell 150,000 viewers to an average of 2,507,000 viewers.

The next quarter dropped 29,000 viewers with Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross backstage, a backstage segment with King Corbin, and Elias performing in the ring before the interruption by Sami Zayn and Cesaro.

The 8:45-9:00 pm quarter increased by 31,000 viewers for Elias vs. Cesaro and King Corbin coming out.

9 – 9:15 pm increased by 125,000 viewers to 2,634,000 viewers for Roman Reigns attacking King Corbin followed by Bill Goldberg’s satellite interview and Firefly Fun House segment and the locker room segment with Daniel Bryan and Heath Slater.

The next quarter fell by 52,000 viewers for Bryan vs. Slater, the Braun Strowman interview with Renee Young followed by Zayn and Shinsuke Nakamura attacking Strowman and The Revival joining in.

9:30-9:45 pm dropped another 160,000 viewers for the Otis video with Tucker, Sheamus vs. Apollo Crews, and the start of the women’s four-way main event. This was the lowest quarter of the show with an average of 2,422,000 viewers.

The final quarter increased by 89,000 viewers for the conclusion of the women’s four-way match with Carmella over Alexa Bliss, Dana Brooke, and Naomi.

-- This week's episode of WWE Backstage drew the show's second-best viewership since it premiered in its regular time slot.

Backstage averaged 169,000 viewers on FS1 last night, which was up 74 percent from the 97,000 viewers it did last week. The rating in the 18-49 demo was a 0.06, up from last week's 0.05.

This week's Backstage began at 11:15 p.m. Eastern time and had a strong lead-in. The second and final day of this year's Westminster Dog Show averaged 1.089 million viewers on FS1 and did a 0.17 rating in 18-49.

The Dog Show began at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time and ended when Backstage began.

CM Punk returned to the Backstage panel last night, making his fourth appearance as an analyst. The best viewership the show has averaged in its normal time slot remains the 180,000 viewers it did on November 19, where Punk officially debuted on Backstage after making a surprise appearance the previous week.

Charlotte Flair was the in-studio guest on Backstage last night.

Here's a look at Backstage's viewership since its official premiere:

November 5 -- 49,000 viewers
November 12 -- 100,000 viewers
November 19 -- 180,000 viewers
November 26 -- 121,000 viewers
December 3 --138,000 viewers
December 10 -- 127,000 viewers
December 17 -- 95,000 viewers
December 24 -- 153,000 viewers
December 31 -- 97,000 viewers
January 7 -- 124,000 viewers
January 14 -- 84,000 viewers
January 21 -- 111,000 viewers
January 28 -- 97,000 viewers
February 4 -- 97,000 viewers
February 11 -- 169,000 viewers

UK TV ratings news from WON
Regarding U.K. ratings, they were expected to drop with the move from Sky to BT, which is in fewer homes. But the opposite has happened as BT has made promotion of WWE a priority, something Sky hasn’t done for years and the numbers are up from the past two or so years. For the week ending on 2/2, Raw did 75,800 viewers live, Smackdown did 111,000 viewers while NXT did 12,600 viewers. MLW on Freesports did 16,800 viewers that week. AEW on ITV did about 100,000 viewers this past week which is much lower than they started out at, which was nearly 300,000. The first week of Raw and Smackdown on TV 5 did 200,000 and 100,000 respectively. So the idea that AEW would dominate viewing numbers, which was the case when WWE was on Sky, is no longer the case with the WWE move to BT and the new deal with 5. However regarding overnight numbers for this past week, they listed AEW on ITV 4 at 45,000 for the first airing on 2/7, Impact of 5 Star did 59,000, Raw on BT on 2/3 did 4,000 and on 2/10 did 24,000. Smackdown didn’t even register the last two weeks (meaning in theory less than 1,000 viewers) this past week

-- Going against the Democratic presidential debate but no major sports competition, both AEW Dynamite and NXT were up in the ratings this week.

Dynamite averaged 893,000 viewers, up nine percent from last week. In the 18-49 demo, the show averaged a 0.31 rating, which was up three percent from the prior week. Dynamite finished fifth in the cable TV ratings in that category.

NXT was up five percent, averaging 794,000 viewers. In the 18-49 demo, it averaged a 0.25 rating, up four percent from last week. NXT finished 16th in the cable rankings, one of their better finishes in that category.

Aside from when the show ran unopposed on Christmas night, it was the highest viewership total for NXT since December 18.

The demos were different than usual this week as the shows tied in people over 50, a category NXT usually wins out in. NXT had a slight win in people 18-34, with a 0.19 rating to Dynamite's 0.18.

AEW won big in males 18-49 with a 0.44 rating to NXT's 0.32. But with females in that age range, the shows both had a 0.18 rating.

The debate likely hurt NXT more than AEW, given that the debate did a monster rating in people over 50, the category NXT usually wins in.

The only sports competition on the night was a college basketball game on ESPN that only aired against the second half of the wrestling shows and averaged 978,000 viewers.

Miz and Mrs, which follows NXT on USA Network, had a season-high 500,000 viewers this week and averaged a 0.17 rating in 18-49, finishing 40th on cable in that demo.

Here's a look at the last 10 weeks of ratings and viewership totals for both Dynamite and NXT:

-- Raw on Monday night did its best showing since December 30 with a 2.44 million viewer average.

For whatever reason, there is a history of Raw doing big numbers on President's Day weekend, as last year's show did 2.77 million.

The number was up four percent from last week, but the bad news was that the 22 percent first-to-thurd hour drop in audience was the seventh biggest in the history of the show.

That was also a similar pattern to last year where the first two hours were much higher than usual and the third hour collapsed by 20 percent.

The second-to-third hour drop was the second largest of all-time, trailing only a 2018 episode that had Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson appearing at the end of the second hour.

This week's Raw was first for the night in 18-49 and sixth overall, trailing only news programs.

The first-to-third hour declines were 24 percent in women 18-49, 21 percent in men 18-49, 11 percent with teenage boys, while teenage girls didn't decline and over 50 declined 20 percent.

The first hour was the most-watched first hour of the show since September 30.

The three hours were:

- 8 p.m. 2.67 million viewers
- 9 p.m. 2.56 million viewers
- 10 p.m. 2.08 million viewers

-- With NBA basketball back after a week off due to the All-Star break as well as stronger-than-usual competition from the news networks, both AEW Dynamite and NXT fell a bit in the ratings this week.

Dynamite averaged 865,000 viewers, down three percent from last week. In the all-important 18-49 demo, the show was also down three percent, averaging a 0.3 rating. That allowed Dynamite to finish ninth in the overall cable TV rankings for that category.

NXT had an average audience of 717,000 viewers, down eight percent. It was their lowest number in 4 weeks. In 18-49, the episode was down 10 percent, averaging a 0.23 rating and finishing 17th in the cable TV rankings.

For the first time, it was a clean sweep for AEW in the demo categories. It beat NXT in every age group, including those over 50. The closest NXT came was in that category with a 0.34 rating to a 0.36 for Dynamite.

Miz & Mrs, which follows NXT on USA Network, fell out of the top 50 in the 18-49 rankings, finishing 62nd with a 0.13 rating. In overall viewers, the show averaged a series-low 394,000.

AEW's Countdown to Revolution special aired after Dynamite and did a 0.14 rating in 18-49, coming in just ahead of Miz & Mrs in those rankings. Miz and Mrs was ahead in total viewers, with the Countdown special averaging 383,000.

Here's a look at the last 10 weeks of viewership totals and 18-49 ratings for both Dynamite and NXT:

-- Raw last night set a couple of new lows, but also had one of the best ratings patterns in a long time.

The basic gist is that the audience was at a low point averaging 2.16 million viewers over the three hours, the lowest for a non-holiday show in modern history that didn't have a major competing sports event. The prior low in that category was 2.17 million viewers on February 3.

The first hour audience of 2.16 million was also a new low for a non-holiday modern show without major sports competition, substantially lower than the previous low mark of 2.25 million on February 24. What makes it worse is that the show came the day after a pay-per-view.

But the audience held up better than usual, growing in hour two and not falling that much in hour three. Essentially it appears less casual fans watched, but those that did stuck with the show at a greater rate than usual.

Raw still took the top three spots in the 18-49 rankings. Overall it was tenth for the day, trailing only news programming.

The overall number was down four percent from last week.

The low first hour is a bad sign because usually after a PPV, the first hour shows a good increase and the overall episode is higher. This indicates there wasn't much interest in the Elimination Chamber follow-up.

The second hour being higher than the first hour happens more frequently during Daylight Savings Time and the low first hour is because people for the next few months are more likely to start the show later.

The show was down 23 percent from the same week last year.

The three hours were:

8 p.m. 2.16 million viewers
9 p.m. 2.22 million viewers
10 p.m. 2.11 million viewers

-- AEW and NXT each experienced a dip in viewership, understandable considering the major coronavirus news breaking during the show (especially the NBA and Tom Hanks). AEW took a bigger hit, dropping to 766,000 compared to 906,000 last week. NXT drew 697,000 compared to 718,000 last week.

AEW’s viewership is the lowest since the Nov. 27 episode drew 663,000. NXT’s viewership was the all-time lowest for an original live version of NXT with the exception of the Oct. 30 episode last year.

NXT’s average viewership for 2020 for their live shows so far is 740,000. AEW’s average for 2020 so far is 897,000.

AEW 932,000

NXT 522,000

NXT did not make the top 50 shows, AEW was #2 for entertainment.

-- AEW Dynamite averaged 819,000 viewers last night for their episode that aired from Daily's Place in Jacksonville with only essential personnel on hand.

The show finished 23rd in the 18-49 demo with a 0.34 rating.

The audience total was down 12 percent from last week, but Dynamite was only down three percent in the key demo. Both the viewership and rating number were right in line with the average over the last 10 weeks.

Over on the USA Network, NXT was up 23 percent from last week's series low and averaged 669,000 viewers. In the 18-49 demo, NXT again finished out of the top 50 but climbed to 56th with a 0.20 rating, up 25 percent from last week.

Last week's NXT featured a modified format without any matches. This week's show had matches that were taped at Full Sail Live, also with only essential personnel in attendance.

Detailed demo ratings are not available for NXT since it was outside the top 50, but for Dynamite its strongest category, as usual, was men 18-49, where the show did a 0.45 rating. That was 10th on cable in that demo.

As expected, coverage of the coronavirus pandemic on the news stations dominated the cable TV rankings. If you eliminated CNN and FOX News from the rankings, Dynamite would've finished second in 18-49, trailing only VH1's Black Ink Crew.

-- Last night viewership for AEW Dynamite and NXT on USA both took at tumble, with AEW dropping to a near-series-low of 685,000 viewers (live and same-night-DVR), down from 823,000 last week. NXT dropped to 590,000, down from 669,000, only the fourth time the series has dropped below 600,000 viewers.

AEW edged NXT with 0.51 cable rating compared to 0.50.

In the 18-49 demographic, AEW dropped to no. 37 in Wednesday night cable rankings with a 0.25 rating. NXT didn’t finish in the top 50 with its 0.15 rating. Cable news shows dominated the charts last night, with 34 of the top 50 programs in the 18-49 demo being held by CNN, Fox, and MSNBC.

On the bright side, while AEW’s live and same-night-DVR viewership is down, the viewers are showing up within three days. The average viewership after three days of delayed viewing in March was 1.06 million, in line with February’s average of 1.08 and only 107,000 down from January’s average of 1.13 million. After seven days, AEW viewership in March’s first three weeks averaged 1.09 million, not far off February’s 1.16 million and January’s 1.17 million. Last night’s same-night viewership, though, is down sharply from the prior weeks, so it’s unlikely the seven-day numbers will hold up as well.

NXT’s three-day viewership in March was 782,000, down from 883,000 in March and 857,000 in January. NXT’s seven-day viewership was 789,000 the first three weeks of March, down from 927,000 in February and 877,000 in January.

-- The Raw after WrestleMania last night did 2.10 million viewers, a number that just has to be accepted for what it is.

The good news is the first-to-third hour drop, which had been near record levels the past two weeks, was 17 percent. That's still significant, but it was greatly alleviated by the Drew McIntyre vs. Big Show match which ended the show with strong gains.

It was advertised during last night's episode that WWE would be showing the aftermath from McIntyre's WWE Championship win at WrestleMania. That aired in the main event segment, with McIntyre doing an interview and being confronted by Big Show. That led to a match where McIntyre retained his WWE Championship against Big Show.

The viewers were up nine percent from last week's record low, but there should have been a substantial increase coming off WrestleMania. It was down 29 percent from the 2.94 million viewers last year for the Raw after WrestleMania, but a huge drop from last year was a lock as well.

The show was also up 19 percent from last week in the 18-49 demo.

The three hours were:

8 p.m. 2.31 million viewers
9 p.m. 2.06 million viewers
10 p.m. 1.93 million viewers

NXT KEEPS VIEWERSHIP LEAD OVER AEW, DYNAMITE STAYS AHEAD IN 18-49
BY PAUL FONTAINE | @PAULACEFONTAINE | APR 16, 2020 2:16 PM

For the second straight week, NXT beat out AEW Dynamite in terms of total viewers but lost in the 18-49 demo.

NXT averaged 692,000 viewers on the USA Network on Wednesday night, which was down 1,000 viewers from last week. The show fell to 58th in the 18-49 demo on cable with a 0.17 rating, down 10.5 percent. It's the fourth straight week the show has missed the top 50 in the 18-49 rankings for the night.

Over on TNT, Dynamite averaged 683,000 viewers, down one percent from the previous week. Dynamite also fell in 18-49 to a 0.25 rating, which was down three percent from last week. The show finished 29th overall on cable in that demo.

Factoring out the news programming that dominated the rankings, AEW would've finished 10th in the 18-49 demo and NXT would have finished 17th.

The total Wednesday audience of 1.375 million viewers was down one percent from last week and was the second lowest overall total since both shows started airing in October.

Here's a look at the last 10 weeks of ratings for both shows:

AEW & NXT RATINGS: DYNAMITE REGAINS VIEWERSHIP LEAD THIS WEEK
BY PAUL FONTAINE | @PAULACEFONTAINE | APR 23, 2020 2:01 PM

Last night's episode of AEW Dynamite on TNT averaged 731,000 viewers, up seven percent from last week. It was the biggest number for the show since March 25.

In the important 18-49 demo, Dynamite averaged the same 0.25 rating as last week. That landed the show in 24th place on cable for the night in that category.

After beating Dynamite in total viewers for the last couple of weeks, last night's NXT on the USA Network averaged 665,000 viewers. That's down four percent from last week. In 18-49, NXT was actually up six percent, averaging a 0.18 rating. The show made its way back into the top 50 rankings, finishing 50th on the night in cable.

Among non-news related programming, AEW finished 11th on cable and NXT was 22nd.

The only demo that NXT won was people over 50, and the two shows tied in females 12-34. AEW won every other category. In males 12-34, AEW more than doubled NXT with a 0.14 rating to NXT's 0.06.

Here's a look at the viewership totals and 18-49 ratings for the last 10 weeks for both shows:

AEW & NXT RATINGS: DYNAMITE WINS IN 18-49 AND TOTAL VIEWERS
BY PAUL FONTAINE | @PAULACEFONTAINE | APR 30, 2020 1:44 PM

Wednesday night ratings are in and AEW Dynamite averaged 693,000 viewers for last night's show on TNT, down 5.2 percent from last week.

The good news is that the show averaged a 0.27 rating in the 18-49 demo, which was up eight percent from last week. It's the show's best number in that category since March 25. Dynamite finished 16th for the night on cable in the demo, its best showing since the move to closed set shows.

The numbers weren't so good for NXT, which fell out of the top 50 for the fifth time in the last six weeks, averaging a 0.16 rating in 18-49, down 11 percent from last week.

In total viewers, NXT averaged 637,000 viewers on USA Network, down 4.2 percent. That was the lowest number for NXT since April 1.

Total viewership for both Wednesday night shows combined was 1.33 million, the second lowest total since their cable TV debuts in October. In fact, AEW's premiere episode on TNT did more viewers than that on its own, an indication of how far things have fallen with the closed set shows.

Here's a look at the last 10 weeks of viewership for Dynamite and NXT as well as the ratings in the 18-49 demo:
