Was he still playing baseball here or had he hurt his shoulder and gotten out of it a few years previous?

He stopped playing baseball in 1974.

I think because it was his debut angle that had him still being a baseball player coming in to help Angelo fight somebody when actually he had been wrestling under a mask as The Spider for a while. So when he debuted everybody thought he was incredible having matches that good allegedly coming straight from baseball. But he was a jobber learning in secret.
