It was a HUGE leap forward from Windows 98SE. Gone were the days of having to re-install the OS several times a year. Gone were the random crashes in games. With 98SE I saw the BSOD many many times. It was a regular occurrence. With XP not only did I never have to re-install it due to it getting screwed up like with 98SE but I didn't experience a lock-up or BSOD for a very long time when I started using it. XP was rock solid stable compared to any Windows before.

At some point I started using Windows Server 2003 as my main OS. Somebody posted about it on DCEmu that you could download a full functional version for free with a 30 day time limit. So I went ahead and gave it a try. When the 30 days were almost up I didn't want to have to uninstall it! Luckily there was a time limit removal tool so I ended up running it for years. I had no interest in Vista so I stayed with XP/Server 2003 for as long as I could. I didn't want to upgrade to Windows 7 but sometime around 2010 I really wanted to play Just Cause 2 and you had to have Vista or 7 as it required DX10. I didn't want to upgrade but once I did I realized Windows 7 was awesome. I used it until 2019 I think. I finally had to upgrade to 10 for a similar reason. I wanted to play Forza Horizon 4 but it required Windows 10.

I didn't like Windows 10 at first but after some mods like openshell it is pretty good. So I like Windows 10 and that is good since Microsoft said it was the last version of Windows they would be making and would just continue to update it. But of course that wasn't true. Now Windows 11 is coming out and I have no interest in it! But I know the same thing will eventually happen. There will be some game that I really want to play but it will require Windows 11 and I'll have to upgrade.

If Windows XP had a good 64-bit version and supported the latest DirectX and drivers were still made for XP it could probably still be used as a main operating system without many compromises.

I still have a computer that runs Windows XP. It really was awesome. I really like that the defragmenter shows you a graph of the files and you can watch it defragment.

Is there a way to use XP’s defragmenter in Windows 10?
