Triangle Strategy review published in Famitsu
The first review score is out for Square Enix’s Switch RPG, which releases this week
The first Triangle Strategy review has been published in the Japanese magazine Famitsu.
According to Ryokutya2089, a website that often posts details from Famitsu early, the publication’s four reviewers awarded the Switch RPG a review score of 35/40, with its critics settling on scores of 8, 9, 9 and 9.
According to Ryokutya, Famitsu praised the game’s battle system and story, which it said carries a lot of weight. However, it notes that the gaps between combat and story sections can be frustratingly long.
Famitsu previously gave Octopath Traveler, Square Enix’s other ‘HD-2D’ Switch RPG, a review score of 36/40 (9/9/9/9).
Whereas Octopath Traveler was a traditional turn-based RPG, Triangle Strategy (as the name suggests) puts more focus on tactics, which may appeal more to fans of the Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics series.
The game is due out for Nintendo Switch this Friday, March 4.
Square Enix is considering other classic games from its 16-bit catalogue to create ‘HD-2D’ remakes for, it’s said.
As reported by Famitsu, during a new ‘radio’ show on Square Enix’s Japanese YouTube channel, developers working on Triangle Strategy confirmed that Square Enix president Yosuka Matsuda wants the studio to use the art style to remake SNES games.
This includes a remake of Japan-only Super Famicom release Live A Live, which was announced during the last Nintendo Direct presentation and reimagines the 16-bit original in the HD-2D art style.
“The president ordered us to make more use of HD-2D, so we decided to think about remakes of past titles,” producer Tomoya Asano said.
“So we lined up possible titles and thought about which could be done in HD-2D, and brought them to the president.”

With Live A Live coming out for the Switch soon, I immediately thought of tons of other Super Nintendo RPGs that never made it off the system. There are way more than I realized that never got ported, remastered or put onto the Virtual Console. Enjoy seeing all of these SNES RPGs!

I preordered the collectors edition of this, as I haven’t played a Rune Factory game since the original one on DS. But these reviews are not exactly glowing, that’s for sure.

Key Features
- Rebirth Exceed – The gauge in the upper right corner of the screen builds up anytime the Player attacks and defends during battles. Store up enough power to activate a particular skill called “Rebirth Exceed”! Each character has unique talents, including dealing with godly damage to enemies and reviving fallen allies who cannot fight.
- Smooth Character Animations – Animations play a more active role now. During battles, smooth animations were made by animating parts of the characters’ pixel art. Both human characters and monsters move a lot more vividly than ever compared to previous titles in the series!
- Battle Maps Transformed Into 3D – 3D models produce battle maps, and the camera angles can rotate during the Player’s Turn. Hidden items, etc., can be found by rotating the camera !?
- Full Options Setting – Options settings include turning the Grid Display ON / OFF on the 3D Battle Maps, “Skill Easy Play,” and “Faster Movement Play,” etc., which are more suitable for repeat play value.

Key Features
- Open World with a Lively Map – A huge open world, including areas such as the Central Plains, Jiangnan, the Western Regions, Nanjiang, Tianshan Mountain, and more. The player can explore the prosperous towns, secret caves, forts and strongholds, and other unique scenic places.
- Unique Pixel Style Rendered in Unreal Engine – With Unreal Engine 4, a new pixel style is created in the game: it switches pixel art games to a 3D environment, giving a new blend of retro pixels and 3D reality. The game not only harks back to the pixelated Wuxia games of the MS-DOS era, but also brings us modernized visual effects and a better game experience.
- Choose the Combat Mode You Like – If you are a fan of strategy games, you can select the traditional turn-based combat mode and outmaneuver your enemies. If you want to take things into your own hands, you can select the real-time combat mode to have an exciting battle and defeat enemies through precise action inputs.
- Hundreds of Martial Arts Moves and Supporting Meridians – All the powerful abilities and moves are yours to pick. You can equip different types of weapons and join various sects. Learning cultivation methods can earn you Meridian Points, and practicing both internally and externally makes you a true martial arts master.
- Travel the World and Make Friends – Most NPCs in the game have a friendship system. You can increase a NPC’s affinity towards you by interacting with them via gift giving, sparring, talking, etc. You can also recruit them to your party and travel the world together. NPCs of different sects have different Jianghu abilities. When you have a good relationship with them, they will even give you their weapons and secret manuals to help you dominate the martial arts world and excel in all aspects.
- Multiple Endings and Freedom of Taking Side Quests – The different choices the player makes in the game lead to different endings. Other than the main story, there are a great number of side quests for the player to explore, with hidden unexpected adventures.
- Dynamic NPCs – Most NPCs in the game have their own behavioral AI. They will get themselves martial arts manuals and grow their power, weaving their own unique stories.”

"Ys X" teased info teased for July 7 issue of Weekly Famitsu
Weekly Famitsu No. 1751, releasing June 23 - though dated for July 7 - has been added to the Kadokawa online store, and the description for the upcoming issue has teased information on the next Ys title, previously confirmed to be Ys X in Falcom Magazine #122. The description in question is translated as follows:
We reviewed Ys IX: Monstrum Nox's western release last year, with impressions of the PC release coming afterward. Needless to say, we enjoyed our time with it, so we're eagerly awaiting information about the next game as much as anyone else is.
A big thanks to Twitter user Hansuke for bringing the page to our attention, and an additional thanks to Twitter user Gu4n for the information from Falcom Magazine #122!

You don't get much clearer than that! It's still up in the air exactly what sort of information Famitsu will drop, and with it still being a few weeks away it's hard to make any guesses. It's likely we won't get any major reveals while Kuro no Kiseki II: Crimson Sin is still awaiting its release in Japan, but we'll have to wait and see exactly what Falcom is ready to announce for Adol Christin's next adventure.[Feature] In celebration of the Ys franchise's 35th anniversary, we're planning to look back on and reminisce over the series' impact and history alongside some key visuals, from Ys I to Ys IX. Furthermore, an interview with Falcom's own Toshihiro Kondo, where we'll learn more about the series' next entry!?
