Time for game of the year!
I played no new games in 2022. So no award will be given.

This year I have played more games than I ever have in my life.
I've played a countless amount of games as old as 1973 and as new as 2021. I have played on countless real systems, and used countless emulators and even spent time in real actual arcades playing countless arcade games of various quality.

I've probably played more games in the past 12 months than the decade prior combined, and I've never shied away from trying new games even if I don't stick with most for more than half an hour

But just because I've been having a lot of fun without updates and DLC and lootboxes and updates and without good graphics and good sound, and just because I'm not talking about every single thing I played constantly and not streaming every second of my enjoyment to try and get internet rich doesn't mean I'm ignorant of the world around me so I'll give some awards to games I haven't played this year anyway.

Game with the most people sucking its dick that I have no interest in playing:
Elden Ring. Rarely have I had so many people tell me to play something regardless of whether it's fun or not.

Game with the most people sucking its dick that I would probably play if 2 year old technology wasn't stupidly fucking expensive for some fuck knows reason:
God of War Ragnarok. I've had a chance to play a few old God of War games. I didn't like them so much when new, but they've grown me, and while I still haven't finished any of them, across 3 different games I sank a good 10-12 hours into.
If I could pick up a PS5 and the game for $500, I would probably be playing it right now and not writing this.

Game I would have probably played if video stores and renting things still existed:
Stray. This game would hold my attention for half an hour for a few nights. It's something I'd pay $7 for 3 days rental. But not buy for $60.

Best indie game I feel guilty for not playing, but not guilty enough to actually buy or play:
Cult of the Lamb. I'd like to support indies more often, and I'd like to support one of only 3 good looking games made in Australia in the past 20 years, but I'm not becoming one of those people who ONLY loves indie games, shits all over anything triple A before it's even announced and won't simply admit that 99.99% of indie games are shit and you're only buying them so you can seem edgy. I might play this down the line and simply not tell anyone I've played it so I can avoid coming off like those people who think untitled goose game is better than GTA 5.

Best game to most quickly lose my interest:
Scorn. When I first saw this game I got a fun boner. From what I'd seen this would be the next great FPS. something that reminds you why you love FPS games whenever you start to forget. Like a Goldeneye, Half Life, System Shock 2, No One Lives forever 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Half Life 2, Bioshock, Bioshock infinite... Sadly I watched about 2 hours of gameplay and my fun boner went soft. This wasn't the FPS it appeared. So glad I waited because there hasn't been a great FPS since 2013.
Sure there's been good ones, but the first time I played any of those games listed I was absolutely blown away. And I so desperately want that feeling back. So badly.

Best game that has no reason to exist, even if it's probably fun:
The new need for speed. Burnout and then Forza Horizon practically rendered Need for Speed useless like Forza Motorsport rendered Gran Turismo useless.
No matter how much EA have tried since 1999, they can't top High Stakes, even if I have fun with most of the other games, making your game look like a Comic book isn't good enough for someone who's played nearly every racing game ever made at this point and likes most of them, even a few some consider garbage.

Studio I missed most in 2022, and wish I could still play their games:
Psygnosis. They've been gone a decade... And it's just over a year since their co-founder died.
I think about how many of their games I've played and replayed this year and how I was surprised that they actually developed a bad PS1 game (psybadek) they published a lot of shit in among the gold, but as developers, this game is the only one of that era that's BAD bad.

I would honestly be saddened that this year is the first year since 1991 that I have played no new games. I didn't play any new games in 1990 when I was three. But in 1991 I played my first game, which happened to be brand new: Sonic the Hedgehog on Master System. (And Alex Kidd right after)

I say I WOULD be saddened, but in missing a whole 12 months of releases I've experienced so much.
Gaming doesn't have to be this cult that you let control you... I've played some really amazing games and also a few piles of shit that make me look forward to seeing what's coming next.
So while 2022 may have been the biggest let down in gaming in my entire lifetime, there's still hope, and there's still plenty for me to enjoy.

Which brings me to my second last award nicely: Game I didn't play because you're not going to top the feeling of the first time I was ever handed a controller and told what to do:
Sonic Frontiers. Sega could put out the perfect Sonic game, and it could still never touch that feeling.
2 decades of shit sonic games can't ruin my childhood though, that already happened, and I had awesome sonic games!
Maybe one day a Sonic game can spark the fire of my love for games again. But if not, that's okay because it's done it once, and that was probably the most important time. Something else is sure to come along and get me excited for the new again and I can't wait to see what 2023 brings.

If you remember that gaming is supposed to be fun the award for most and hardest laughter at a game I'd never played before this year:
BCV: Battle Construction Vehicles. When I was told to check it out I was told I would enjoy it. Made by Artdink (makers of A-Train which I'm very familiar with) I was told to get the European release.

Holy fucking shit I've not laughed this hard at a videogame since Conkers Bad Fur Day and Nolf2.

From the concept, to the story, to the voice acting, to the dialogue, to the battle mechanics THIS GAME IS FUCKING BRILLIANT!
I'd happily miss out on all of 2023 and 2024 for another game that surprised and delighted me to this degree. Jesus it was fun.

Game of the Year (for me):
Splatoon 3

It may be the only game that released this year that I played for more than 5 hours.

Hmm.
The game I would have played if I ever invited people over to play games or if I was a father and wanted something to play with my kids.

Your game of the year gets me thinking.
And now that I think about how much multiplayer I've played this year, it's probably the least amount ever.

What with everyone being on their own schedules with their own lives and all wanting to play different things entirely.
Certain friends just want to watch every YouTuber in the world do let's plays, others want to play Wow so seriously it's more work than a full time job, some want to play Minecraft clones and nothing else, some have abandoned videogames almost entirely to have get togethers to to play board games.
But there were a few moments of we all got together and played 5 player PS1 on a CRT OR 4 player switch and we all talk about getting together to play some couch Xbox again like the old days.

There's so many choices of how people most want to have fun and 2022 didn't really have a release that united gamers definitively.
I think the last game we ALL played at the same time was GTA5. everyone I know played that and the multiplayer was just so much fun before it went off the rails with hackers and mods.

Even in lockdowns I played more local multiplayer games than this year. I used to set up the projector a few times a year and we'd have fun with couch multiplayer, haven't used the projector in like 3 years.

What was everyone else playing this year since I played nothing?

Here are my games of 2022:

1/ Vampire Survivors
2/ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

I think those 2 were they only new games I've played this year. I've bought 2022 games, just haven't gotten around to playing them yet.

Finished Days Gone (Steam) and Mafia 3 (XSX) recently and they were both good, but neither are from this year.

I have a married friend that whenever the two of them come and hang out, all they want to do is have everyone sit around a TV and watch YouTube videos. I’ve never understood why it’s so fun for them to spend hours with friends watching YouTube videos of people playing games, making fun of games, or just doing stupid YouTuber stuff in general. It’s like him and his wife are in a contest to show off the best YouTube video.

People think I'm odd when I reveal how little YouTube I actually watch and of the little watching of YouTube I do, the smallest of that is gaming related.
It can be a bit of a sap when they mention what all the YouTubers are playing and want to do nothing else. Wow. Random youtuber is playing a video game again and they're about to do a 9 hour stream... I don't care about them streaming.

There's only one I even watch play games with any consistency and I don't often watch them with friends, only a video here and there when no one can decide what to watch or play and that's let's game it out.
I like let's game it out for a bunch of reasons: 1) He plays the kind of games I'm not usually into. 2) Genuinely has fun breaking shit and going insane overkill and 3) doesn't try to be funny, just is.

If I was interested in Playing most of those games myself I wouldn't be such a fan. I'd be playing them and having fun myself instead. :olol:

One might wonder then how you have become such an awesome gamer without studying. Like remember when you and I played pool and we whacked those balls together all evening and we didn’t lose a single one down those holes.

I play pool with planets all the time.

Incidentally, I am horrible at pool/snooker/using a stick to push a ball into other balls to go down holes, just about the only thing I'm worse at is bowling... It's nothing like Wii Sports bowling where a perfect game is easy. I'm so bad at bowling once I missed pins while bumper bowling and they said it was impossible to miss.
Shows what they know!

One time I got a strike in real bowling! It was after the game was over and my score of like 3 pissed me off to such a point that I picked up a ball and threw it into the next lane... Perfect fucking strike! BAH!!!
at least I'm ok at darts, not the best, but I've never missed the board by 8 feet and hit some waitress. So there's that.

I played darts years ago when I followed you to Grant’s place. I missed the board a few times and put holes in the shed. Looks like I was in good company as the shed was already like swiss cheese round the dart board.

Why is there no horse racing/gambling simulator?
I've had a little fun with G1 jockey and poker recently (and I mean little) and they could make both concepts more fun by combining them.

Betting on races and then fixing or tanking races while pouring gambling wins into better race tracks, horses and casinos seems like something I could really have a lot of fun.

Overused the whip? Pay off the officials to keep them quiet.
You could also add in some road rash elements for a bit of fun... Whip your opponents off their horses If they're winning.
And when you're facing a ban from the sport start using your funds to hire goons to beat up the officials.

From the studio that brought you Skate Bored, and Sub Par Mini Golf comes...
The Need for Steed: High Stakes.

There's Phar Lap Horse Racing Challenge. It's OK. It's on the consoles, PC and mobile.

There is gambling in it, although from memory you can only bet on your own horse.

No underworld stuff though.

If I could only bet on my horse I'd need the ability to fix the races to make the other horses suck more.
