Found US Version of N64 64DD

Post by Hawq »

From a thread at http://assemblergames.com via /vr/

Hey there, I am a big collector in the Seattle area and I am reaching out to you guys because I can't find what I am looking for.

I acquired what might be a rather unusual N64 64DD drive. Keep in mind, I live in Seattle where Nintendo of North America resides just 20 minutes away...

Notice anything unusual about this screenshot? Keep in mind, the reason why the picture is soft is because it's running through a HDMI upscaler...but the picture with English text (instead of Japanese) is legit. This is the prototype for the US version of the 64DD.

Have you seen this before?

This unit also had a N64 blue disc inside, but I don't know what is on it as the drive just clicks and displays an error message. However, I KNOW that Nintendo of America used this unit and the contents could be anything. This unit also has some usual writing on the front of it that doesn't look like any third party developer kit I have seen. I was told the label means "Nintendo Ultra Disc unit #1 for the USA".

I want to know what the contents of that blue disc is. Do you have a recommendation of somebody who could help me out?

Thanks!

Interesting find, the disc might be corrupted which is why its throwing out error messages and/or it might be incompatible with the US version if it has Japanese text on it. So to access it's contents they need to find a Japanese DD drive and if that doesn't work I imagine the disc is definitely corrupt or possibly encrypted.

N64 DD Hidden Gems... from a massive library of FOUR games, it's a typical Metal Jesus video in a way :olol:

Mario Artist would be nailed on, would probably be a safe bet that he's already covered Mario Paint.

This is the first I've heard of MetalJesus, but this video was OK. What's wrong with him?

Matisfaction loves him. Basically he has these hidden gems videos and talks about games that everyone has already played. That's not really a hidden gem if everyone knows it's good. Admittedly I only watched one of those videos, but the games he talked about where games people would know, like and play.

He's not bad, we just like making fun of him. The big joke are his 'Hidden Gem' videos where he tries to point out games you may have missed on each console, but half the games on the list were actually huge titles at the time. For instance, his first DS Hidden Gem video features Dragon Quest and Rune Factory. Yeah, buddy, nobody has ever heard of Rune Factory despite having 6 sequels among multiple console (3 of which were on the DS itself).

Don't forget that Dragon Quest at one point couldn't be legally released on a work day.

I don't know why some people insist on stretching 4:3 images on a 16:9 display? You can sort of get away with it on PAL machines as they were letterboxed, but full screen 4:3 NTSC looks terrible.
