PayDay 3 is set to take place in New York, with the original gang to return

Starbreeze shares new details during 10th anniversary live stream

PayDay 3, the upcoming cooperative heist game from Starbreeze, is set to take place in New York, with the original gang set to return.

As revealed during a live stream to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the franchise, new details including the setting and cast, were confirmed by director Erik Wonnevi.

The game, which is set to release in 2023, takes place several years after the ending of PayDay 2 with “The gang being pulled back, not purely through their own choice”.

Wonnevi also confirmed that the gang from the original game would be included in PayDay 3. “Dallas, Hoxton, Chains and Wolf make their glorious return to heisting.”

PayDay 3’s narrative is set to take on the world of the Dark Web and cryptocurrency, he said.

“Payday has transitioned into the digital age, so software giants, crypto currencies, mass surveillance and the Dark Web this is reflected in future updates to gadgetory.”

While no gameplay has been shown, Starbreeze did reveal new concept art of each of the four characters, as well as a look at a heist in downtown New York. This is where PayDay 3 is set to begin, according to Wonnevi.

PayDay 3 is set to be published by Koch Media, its new “premium gaming label” Prime Matter.

The new label will be operated out of Koch’s headquarters in Munich and is a “dynamic mix of seasoned industry veterans and enthusiastic fresh faces creating an incredible team of diverse multi-cultured gaming experts,” according to a statement.

“Prime Matter is a new home for premium games, offering both current and future partners all the expertise of the Koch Media Group alongside a new and dynamic team dedicated to maximising their true potential,” said Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz in a statement.

“The core of the video games industry is, of course, entertainment. Prime Matter will constantly look to innovate and inspire gamers across all its activities while retaining the fundamental values of what makes our industry so special – it is intrinsically fun.”

Okami director wants to make a sequel

Hideki Kamiya is one of the industry’s most prolific game developers, known for his work on Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and more. Even amongst all those, Okami stands out as one of his most revered works. A decade and a half after the release of the first game, Kamiya has expressed his desire to make a sequel.

In an interview with YouTube channel Cutscenes, Hideki Kamiya discussed the history of Okami, as well as its potential future, saying “Okami had been built on various ideas, and I figured that regarding things that didn’t make it in, since I would probably have a chance to work on it again, I could foreshadow and expand on some things, addressing them in a sequel and answering player’s questions while hinting at how the story ends.”

He continued, “When building a new IP, you get a lot of ideas mid-development that you want to implement. However, in the later part of development, some of these ideas cannot be implemented anymore for system or schedule reasons. You start saying, ‘Let’s put what we couldn’t do this time in a sequel.’”

Image

Of course, Okami never received a direct sequel, with the only other game being for the Nintendo DS, and also saw no involvement from Kamiya. 15 years later, Okami is still on Kamiya’s mind however, with him saying “We obviously wanted to make a sequel. Ultimately, things took another turn. Okami wasn’t a commercial hit back when we released it. It didn’t sell that many copies. However, it gradually became a critical success, positively received by many people.”

It would appear as though Kamiya is hoping to return to the series, as according to the director “I started seeing people ask about these plot points that we left hanging, asking for a sequel. The more I see those, the more I feel this is work that I’ve left unfinished. There’s always this part of me that thinks that I need to take care of this at some point. I want to do it someday.”

Okami is widely regarded as one of the best PlayStation 2 games of all time, and so it is understandable that Kamiya would hold the game so close to his heart. With how long it has been since the first game, it is clear that if Okami were to get a sequel, it would be developed out of love, and not in the pursuit of profits.

Neowiz and Round8 Studio today unveiled the first-ever gameplay video for Lies of P, a fantastically baroque Action RPG inspired by the classic Italian novel Pinocchio from Carlo Collodi. The ruined, but once beautiful city of Krat is on full display in the new video. Hideous and twisted automatons rule the landscape, and it’s up to P to find Mr. Geppetto and reverse the calamity that has befallen Krat.

In the video, fans should notice the reactive counter-attacks, the array of unique weapons to find and put to use, and that Pinocchio's own mechanical arm acts as an additional tool or weapon to give unique skills - such as a grappling hook and more.

Lies of P is set to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) in 2023.

Epic Games acquires Rock Band maker Harmonix

Epic Games has acquired Rock Band and Dance Central maker Harmonix Systems, GamesBeat has learned.

Epic has been on an acquisition binge during the past year, as it has raised well over $1 billion to invest in the metaverse, and Harmonix has content that should put it further on that goal. Based in Boston, the company has been devoted to making music video games for decades. Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney wants to build the metaverse. Update: Epic Games has confirmed the deal.

The metaverse is the universe of virtual worlds that are all interconnected, like in novels such as Snow Crash and Ready Player One. And Epic CEO Tim Sweeney wants to build it as an open platform. Meanwhile, Harmonix’s games will help Epic with adding musical elements to Fortnite (which is Epic’s defacto metaverse platform).

Here’s what our own Jeff Grubb wrote about Harmonix back in 2014:

Alex Rigopulos founded Harmonix is 1995 with Eran Egozy. While attending MIT, the two co-developed an algorithm that could generate music on the fly and started considering how they could use that for games. In 2001, the company teamed up with Sony Computer Entertainment to create Frequency, a rhythm game that has players traveling down an octagonal highway of musical notes. The studio followed up Frequency with 2003’s Amplitude.

“Harmonix has always aspired to create the world’s most beloved interactive music experiences, and by joining Epic we will be able to do this at scale,” said Rigopoulos, who is chairman, in a statement. “Together we will push the creative boundaries of what’s possible and invent new ways for our players to make, perform and share music.”

Grubb also wrote:

Over the next several years, the company released more music-based hits like Karaoke Revolution before breaking out with the novel smash hit Guitar Hero. That game came with a plastic guitar controller that required players to strum and hit buttons along the neck in time with onscreen prompts. It caught on with a huge audience well beyond typical gamers.

Harmonix went on to developer two more Guitar Hero games before publisher Activision moved development to its Neversoft and Vicarious Visions studios. That prompted Harmonix’s most ambitious release, Rock Band, which took the idea of Guitar Hero and turned it into a local multiplayer game with multiple people on different instruments and vocals.

Rock Band became a hit party game. Harmonix developed and released multiple sequels and sold hundreds of different songs as downloadable content. After Rock Band 3 in 2010, however, the market for music games with plastic instruments dried up. The studio moved on to Kinect-controlled motion games like Dance Central, which performed well for Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

The company is now attempting to bring music concepts into several different genres as it looks for ways to remain relevant on consoles as well as PC, smartphones, and tablets. Since then it has worked on titles like Fuser, Drop Mix, SingSpace, and more.

Today, Epic and Harmonix talked about their possibilities.

“Music is already bringing millions of people together in Fortnite, from our emotes to global concerts and events,” said Alain Tascan, vice president of game development at Epic Games, in a statement. “Together with the Harmonix team we will transform how players experience music, going from passive listeners to active participants.”

Harmonix has a track record of creating fun and engaging music experiences designed for everyone to enjoy. Epic said that as it works to build the metaverse, this expertise is needed to reimagine how music is experienced, created and distributed.

The Harmonix team will collaborate closely with Epic to develop musical journeys and gameplay for Fortnite while continuing to support existing titles including Rock Band 4. Here’s another post on Harmonix’s blog for more details.

"Activision Blizzard management reportedly told striking employees that they would only be paid through Wednesday, according to the Post. So employee organizer Jessica Gonzalez—who announced her impending departure from the company last month—has set up an ABK Strike Fund to offset strikers' lost wages and "assist in the potential relocation of Raven Software workers who were forced to move without financial assistance at the insistence of Activision Blizzard." As of this writing, that fund has raised over $100,000 of its $1 million goal in roughly 12 hours."

They've done it... THEY'VE FINALLY DONE IT!
People from Activision have found a way to make money without even making games at all.

I've been impressed at how they've made money with incompetence for decades and now they've finally hit the point where they literally have to do fucking nothing and and make money.

Management must be so proud yet jealous of them.

KUDOS ACTIVISION EMPLOYEES! The whole industry salutes you.

LA-MULANA creator Takumi Naramura launches sci-fi horror action game Pixel Game Maker Series MEDIUM-NAUT for Switch, PC

Solve the mystery of the crashed pioneer ship.

Image

Pixel Game Maker Series MEDIUM-NAUT, a science-fiction horror action game from LA-MULANA creator Takumi Naramura built in Pixel Game Maker MV, launched for PC via Steam on December 21 for $14.99 and will launch for Switch via Nintendo eShop on December 23, publisher Gotcha Gotcha Games and developer Blue Boss announced.

Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:

About

An exploratory science-fiction horror action game by Takumi Naramura of LA-MULANA!

Story

The space pioneer ship Ostracida has crashed on an uncharted planet, but the survey team that went to rescue the survivors was unable to enter the ship and return.

They were unable to enter the ship due to psychic phenomena.

So they ask a psychic medium, “Yumi Kisara Spiritist” to investigate the crashed ship.

The objective is to recover the ID chips of the passengers and investigate the ship, but it seems that there is “something” lurking that cannot be easily solved.

Fingers crossed for consideration!

System

By acquiring various items on the ship, you can change your attack methods and expand your range of action.

However, in order to acquire items, you must give up your HP (physical strength) as compensation. If you proceed without thinking, your HP will quickly dwindle and you will be killed by the slightest enemy attack. Play the game repeatedly and make choices that suit your style.

Investigation

The souls of the crew are still on board. By talking to them, you can obtain items and collect ID chips, and by obtaining ID chips, you can enter their private rooms. There are also reports from Dr. Simon and personal records of the crew, so you can investigate what happened on the ship.

Pixel Game Maker Series is a series where you can enjoy games created using the action game production software Pixel Game Maker MV.
